About - Whirlpool Cabrio WTW5500X[W]

The Whirlpool Cabrio WTW5500X[W] is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, top-loading washing machine models like the Cabrio WTW5500X[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

Nice washer (when working). It is about 4 years old. I do my own repairs: 1) spring upgrade to stop shaking, 2) coins obstructing the drain tube 3) tub bearing replacement and upgrade , 4) main board replacement upgrade. These repairs would cost more than the washer if I had to pay to have them done.

Whirlpool has been top of the line for years. However these new electronic HE washers are ridden with bugs and design flaws. How about some engineering from the 60's 70's that made the great Whirlpools. I guess those engineers retired.

The Cabrio and other similar brands made by Whirlpool are just poor engineering and cheap manufacturing. I bet an Industrial Engineer spent many hours figuring out how to make these machines as cheaply as possible. This stuff is junk.

Recommendation: buy an old Whirlpool - the kind that fills up with water and last for 20 years. Find them on Craigslist. You can fix them cheaply and the repair lasts.

Comment:
We bought our Cabrio WTW5500xwo in Oct. 2014. After using it for the first week I was not impressed with its ability to clean our clothes. Lint, soap, stains were all present after the wash cycle. After rewashing items (NOT energy efficient now, is it?)the same lint spots would still be present. And no, these are not mixed loads. Our family wears dress clothing frequently and even those these items are often lighter weight they would be FULL of lint/soap stains. Heavy loads were no better. We have used a wide range of HE product soap trying to dispel this problem to no avail. Dress shirts often 'donut' the rest of the load like a cream filled tucking them in so tight it would be hard to remove items. Clothing would often be totally dry in spots. Even though the manual states that the 'new' energy efficient models wrings them out so well it makes them appear dry you can truly tell that they were not wet in those areas. It would have cost $319 to replace the broken control panel on a machine that we paid near five hundred for. IF you were to buy a Cabrio buy the extended warranty and HOPE that it breaks within the right time frame or you will also be in the market for another new washer. Buying used this time so we do not keep putting hundreds out every few years on their 'wonderful' new energy efficient models! We are buying a year old Maytag for about 150. If it should last 3 years and 9 months like our Cabrio I will at least feel as if we got our money's worth. I also think that with today's technology that these companies should be able to make products that last 15-20 years like they used to. The older products lasted so much better!
