About - Whirlpool Cabrio WTW5500X[W]

The Whirlpool Cabrio WTW5500X[W] is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, top-loading washing machine models like the Cabrio WTW5500X[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

Comment:
We bought our Cabrio WTW5500xwo in Oct. 2014. After using it for the first week I was not impressed with its ability to clean our clothes. Lint, soap, stains were all present after the wash cycle. After rewashing items (NOT energy efficient now, is it?)the same lint spots would still be present. And no, these are not mixed loads. Our family wears dress clothing frequently and even those these items are often lighter weight they would be FULL of lint/soap stains. Heavy loads were no better. We have used a wide range of HE product soap trying to dispel this problem to no avail. Dress shirts often 'donut' the rest of the load like a cream filled tucking them in so tight it would be hard to remove items. Clothing would often be totally dry in spots. Even though the manual states that the 'new' energy efficient models wrings them out so well it makes them appear dry you can truly tell that they were not wet in those areas. It would have cost $319 to replace the broken control panel on a machine that we paid near five hundred for. IF you were to buy a Cabrio buy the extended warranty and HOPE that it breaks within the right time frame or you will also be in the market for another new washer. Buying used this time so we do not keep putting hundreds out every few years on their 'wonderful' new energy efficient models! We are buying a year old Maytag for about 150. If it should last 3 years and 9 months like our Cabrio I will at least feel as if we got our money's worth. I also think that with today's technology that these companies should be able to make products that last 15-20 years like they used to. The older products lasted so much better!

Comment:
I owned a Whirlpool agitator washing machine and Whirlpool dryer for 30 years. They were fantastic. This new washer does not wash clothes. There are spots that do not even get wet during the cycle. Stains do not come out. The water level is so low that the clothes do not move enough in the water in order to get clean. The clothes are wrinkled, stained, full of lint and generally need to be washed again in order to be somewhat clean. I have put stain stick on items and when the wash is done the stain stick is still on the clothes. Very frustrating! I often still smell deodorant on clothes, too. It is also frustrating to have to clean your washing machine. The tablets are not cheap and it will smell if you do not clean. After the clean cycle runs then you have to wipe down the interior because each hole is full of lint and dirt. Unbelievable! This machine is not energy efficient because you will need to wash your clothes two or three times before they are clean! The dispenser for fabric softener is not removable so after every fourth or fifth wash I must take a towel and clean the dispenser which is full of thick, clumpy fabric softener that has remained in the dish. Unbelievable! I am so disappointed with this machine and I dread doing wash now because of it. The dryer is another story. Things come out wrinkled and they are never fully dry. I can put 20 towels on the normal cycle and they are damp to dry. If I put 5 or 6 towels on the same cycle they are very wet when the 40 minutes are finished. Unbelievable! So unhappy.
