The Whirlpool Cabrio WTW5500X[W] is part of the washing machine
test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, top-loading washing machine
models like the Cabrio WTW5500X[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.
Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)
Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.
Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

Stainless-steel tub Tubs constructed of stainless steel are likely to be more durable than plastic or porcelain, and they allow for higher spin speeds. Plastic is the next most durable choice.

Auto temp. control This feature automatically mixes hot and cold water to reach the chosen wash temperature (which differs on various makes of washers). It's a good way to compensate for normal variations in tap-water temperature and prevents problems caused by water that's too cold, which keeps detergent from working properly.
Auto temp. control
Yes
Auto bleach dispenser Automatic Bleach dispenser releases the bleach at the proper point in the cycle, giving the detergent additives sufficient time to work.
We used the product for about six loads of laundry a week. After about three months the machine started making sounds like a plane taking off and explosive popping sounds at certain points in the cycle. Because it continued to wash clothes, we kept using it. It was a major ordeal to get at the machine for repairs so we just hoped it would keep doing as it was supposed to. Today after less than three years, it stopped. Very expensive machine for such a short amount of use.

This machine is now 6 Years old and has needed major repairs 4 times. The gears in the washer twice, the tub cracked , the mother board failed, and now it is leaking somewhere. This Cabrio will twist clothing together and has literally ripped a hole in my towels. I have tries loading it to whirlpool specifications and lowering the spin speed. Nothing really helps... Hate this washer. My last washer was a Maytag.... It lasted 22 years with ONE repair.... I believe we paid about a thousand dollars for this washer. That was about 975 dollars to much

there is nothing that I can say good about this washing machine. Anything that is white is now gray; clothes become tangled 99% of the time; and I do mean tangled to the point that they are difficult to untangle. Sheets get unbalanced --- blankets or just about anything you wash. You can not leave the house and let it run. And it is not like it happens occasionally, it is all the time. I would love to return it for a different washer --- tried and was not allowed to.

Leave clothes dripping wet. Does not clean clothes.
I bought this machine in September 2010. This washer DOES NOT get your clothes clean. The poor spinning / draining action will not allow the water to properly drain from clothes. It will not complete a cycle or will not work on all the cycles. When I removed the clothes from this machine they will just drip all over the floor and I ended up soaking wet. I would not recommend this washer to anybody. Needless to say, I returned it and bought a new washer.
