About - Whirlpool Cabrio WTW5640X[ ] (Lowe's)

The Whirlpool Cabrio WTW5640X[ ] (Lowe's) is a top-loading washing machine available from Whirlpool. The Cabrio WTW5640X[ ] (Lowe's) typically costs $675 .

Consumer Reports recommends that you match the features on a model to the needs you have. Here's our take on some of the specifications and features that are commonly available on top-loading washing machine models like the Cabrio WTW5640X[ ] (Lowe's).

Energy star:
The federal Energy Star program, administered by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy, identifies a wide range of home appliances that use 10-50% less energy and water than standard models. These appliances can help you use less energy at home and save money on your utility bills.

Stainless-steel tub:
Tubs constructed of stainless steel are likely to be more durable than plastic or porcelain, and they allow for higher spin speeds. Plastic is the next most durable choice.

Auto temp. control:
This feature automatically mixes hot and cold water to reach the chosen wash temperature (which differs on various makes of washers). It's a good way to compensate for normal variations in tap-water temperature and prevents problems caused by water that's too cold, which keeps detergent from working properly.

Comment:
Have owned 3 years, after having two washers over the prior 30. Not one of my best purchases - leaves clothes really wrinkled, no way to use more water than it decides you need - which doesn't seem to be enough to clean effectively.

The spin cycle is also very rough on fabrics - it destroyed the edges of a new set of towels in less than a year.

The final indignity was the dreaded lid lock switch error. Worked fine in the morning, did another load in the evening, and it wouldn't go further than the process of sensing the load size - now we're looking into a $170 bill. This is something that should be prompting a recall - a lot of discussion boards reference this issue.

Not sure what's a better choice, but I would definitely skip the Whirlpool Cabrio series. Tries to be so smart, it's dumb.

Comment:
The low water level on this machine definitely makes this NON energy saving because we have to pre wash and do a second rinse to clean / rinse clothes effectively. We always have to use warm or hot water settings or there is excessive residue on dark clothing even using the least amount of detergent.

Comment:
I wash 5-7 loads per week. The machine worked great in the beginning...now there is a soap residue on our dark colored clothes. The residue is probably on all our clothes, but I can see it on the darks. Company would send out a technician that I would have to pay for but otherwise, they do not have any suggestions beyond what I have already tried...maintaining the cleaning cycles, making sure it is HE detergent, using less detergent, changed detergents, extra rinse cycle, etc. Their only suggestion was to use the Rinse and Spin cycle AFTER I finished washing clothers through the regular cycles!

No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
