About - Whirlpool Cabrio WTW5700X[W]

The Whirlpool Cabrio WTW5700X[W] is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, top-loading washing machine models like the Cabrio WTW5700X[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

Comment:
I started off breaking my ankle on New Years Day, 2013. Hospital, money, money, money... One week later, our laundry room is flooded because our old washing machine just died. We figured we would get another washing machine, but a nice, energy efficient model. We saw this Cabrio washer at Menard's, did a little reasearch online (not here), and it seemed like a 50/50 crapshoot. I figured that I am just reading a handful of reviews out of the thousands sold, so maybe these naysayers were just too nit-picky.

Since there wasn't a regular agitator in it, I was kind of leery. I was always told that the clothes need to cycle to get to the bottom of the washing machine, back up, back down, until it was done. This machine doesn't seem to do that at all. I put some clothes in where there are 2 rings on the bottom where one turns clockwise and the other anti-clockwise where this is supposed to move the clothes up the drum then down the middle, or vice versa. Either way, all it seems to do is move clothes around in water.

Seriously, if all I had to do to clean clothes was to just kind of move them around in soapy water, swish swish, and then wring them out, why did I buy this thing? I have to wash everything as a bulky load just to make sure that all of the clothes will at least get wet. If I put it on auto, it will read the size of the load, then dispense water about 1/4 the height of the load, figuring that the clothes will go up, then down through the water. If it did that, I wouldn't be writing this review.

The faster the clothes cycle from the top to the bottom, the cleaner they get. Just getting your clothes wet and moving them around a bit does not make them clean. Now I have to wait until this machine goes belly up to buy a normal top-loader that works correctly.

Comment:
This is the worst washer I have ever had. Not only does it not get clothes clean, it acutally damages them. Sleeves and pantlegs become so intertwined that they get stretched and distorted. It has continued to disappoint us for the last six years. It's so unreliable that I am astounded Whirpool put this product on the market.

Comment:
I have four children (young), so I have to wash clothes often. It does well with many clothes BUT it can become unbalanced easily (on its own) and when it does... it fills the tub up... which I've only seen correct the problem once. Normally all that happens is the clothes are then so soaked that it's hard for you to spin it by hand (the easy way to rebalance) without removing half of the (now) sopping wet clothes. Worse than that, the washing machine has some magical way of sucking clothing (of all kinds/thicknesses) down into the space between the tub and the basket... so then you have to take the clothes all out (because it can't drain), take the top off, pull out the basket and extract the likely ruined clothing. It's horrible. The only reason it's a 2 not a 1 is because if it's not doing either of the above (which it does often), it really does a great job.

Cabrio Washer
10/24/2012
Strength
I had purchased my Cabrio pair at HHGregg when I told the salesman I wanted something energy efficient and quiet because my laundry room is close to the Master bedroom. In the beginning it was quiet.
Weakness
After 4 years this washer sounds like a jet plane taking off on the spin cycle.
I would not recommend this washer at all. I had a Kenmore pair that lasted 20 years and then I sold them. Today we spend so much money on appliances and they only last a few years and need replaced. I am very disappointed. The parts to repair this machine would have been about two thirds of the cost and that did not include labor if unable to repair ourselves. Today on the spin cycle water flooded my laundry room and our Cabrio is in the garage awaiting recycling.

Too little waterNo Real Savings since you have to use Bulk cycle to get more water which means a longer time cycle.
Just bought this washer and am enormously dissappointed. How can a load of wash possibly get clean using only 3 of water? Plus rather than agitating, it seems to beat the clothes without submerging. As for savings....Ive had to resort to always using the Bulky setting which releases more water into the tub - this in turn adds more time to the load completion. For one regular wash, it took 75 minutes start-to-finish! Have my fingers crossed that I can exchange this Thing for a reliable, capable, agitator top-loader like I gave up after a dozen years. After purchasing this washer - why would one have to cough up more $$ for a Warrantee. You expect it to work for at least a few years without repair. Bad Design all way around.

Worst Washer Ever!

Strength
Looks awesome!
Weakness
1) Major design flaws. 2) Breaks down constantly
This overpriced washer looks great. Probably why I decided to buy the 1st edition of this model 4 years ago. Ever since we purchased it we had over 15 service calls. If you leave a coin in your pocket, watch out! It will somehow end up in the pump and ruin the plastic blades. This happened several times. Now that it is out of warranty weve had new issues with it tilting and going unbalanced. We made sure it was level but it cant get through one load without tilting or going unlevel. It will barely clean your clothes since there is no achitator! Some times part of your clothes you throw in there will not have even gotten wet! Even with a small load. If you buy this washer after reading this, make sure you have someone handy to keep repairing it. The previous whirlpool I owned lasted almost 20 years. It was old school - no digital displays and computer boards to go bad, just dials and switches. If this washer worked the way it was advertised, it would have been worth the $850 I paid for it. Other than looking nice in your laundry room, this washer is JUNK!T
