About - Whirlpool Cabrio WTW5800BW

The Whirlpool Cabrio WTW5800BW is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, top-loading washing machine models like the Cabrio WTW5800BW are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

Comment:
Routine household usage for married couple. Currently the computer is showing an F1 error message that will cost $300 to fix. Of course we paid $90 to find that out. This model has no agitator, so we are unsure about the end result, although the capacity is large for us.

Comment:
This machine was okay for the first year except for when we used the delicates cycle. Then the clothes did not get clean at all and had to be rewashed using a normal cycle. After 13 months or so, the machine started to break down. We have had to replace several parts and have spent almost $1000 repairing it. The company that repaired it said we should get repairs covered by Whirlpool because it is very common for them to see this problem with this machine. When we called Whirlpool they refused and told me I had to pay $400 to purchase a new warrantee and then they could fix it. The washer also smells like a wet dog all the time despite the fact that I clean it every week or two with Affresh and leave the top open as recommended by the manufacturer.

Comment:
This replaced a 23 year-old Maytag (transmission finally failed) and is our first high efficiency washer. Spent a lot of time looking at different models at the retailer. Researched on-line reviews and CR's ratings. I wanted to get the top rated LG 1101. Since my wife does most of the laundry and her biggest concern was long cycle times for these HE units, I steered her to this as the highest rated recommended unit with the shortest normal cycle time. Units are in the basement so comments about the washer being a bit noisy though accurate were not a big concern for us. Since our Whirlpool dryer was also 23 years old and there was a promotional discount, we opted to buy the matching 5800 dryer which is top-rated (it has performed extremely well - drying time is much less than the sensor estimated cycle time.) Have had a few loads that went out of balance and the see through lid on the washer is great for being able to see if there's a problem (lid locks automatically). For those that complain the new washers are too slow, at least being able to see that the washer is doing something besides making noise helped avoid frustration. Cycles are more complex than traditional agitators since they measure load to determine how much water is needed, shift clothes for balance, etc.) Overall, my wife says typical wash/dry cycles are about 15 to 20 minutes longer than they used to be - clothes take less time to dry because dryer is great and washer spins more moisture out than old machine. Don't understand comments from people that these washers don't get clothes wet. There are cycles that will use more water if that's what you want. We try to follow recommendations in the manual and are very pleased with the results so far. Looking forward to lower water bills.
