About - Whirlpool Cabrio WTW5800BW

The Whirlpool Cabrio WTW5800BW is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, top-loading washing machine models like the Cabrio WTW5800BW are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

Worst Machine EVER!
8/15/2014
Pros
Spins Clothes Dry
Cons
Doesn't Clean Effectively
Sometimes No Water In Tub
Best Uses
Comment:
I understand low water usage, but it dispenses barely enough to wet the clothes, and sometimes NO water at all! Clothes do not come clean. My son plays football and my husband is a trucker/diesel mechanic; this washer does NOTHING for their clothes. My son's new white school shirts came out dirtier than they went in! Sometimes one pant leg is cleaned and the other is not. Though bought the extended warranty, I was told by customer service that if they determine that the machine works properly, I will have to pay for the service call. This is the worst washing machine ever! I will NEVER purchase another Whirlpool item!

Comment:
Routine household usage for married couple. Currently the computer is showing an F1 error message that will cost $300 to fix. Of course we paid $90 to find that out. This model has no agitator, so we are unsure about the end result, although the capacity is large for us.

Comment:
This machine was okay for the first year except for when we used the delicates cycle. Then the clothes did not get clean at all and had to be rewashed using a normal cycle. After 13 months or so, the machine started to break down. We have had to replace several parts and have spent almost $1000 repairing it. The company that repaired it said we should get repairs covered by Whirlpool because it is very common for them to see this problem with this machine. When we called Whirlpool they refused and told me I had to pay $400 to purchase a new warrantee and then they could fix it. The washer also smells like a wet dog all the time despite the fact that I clean it every week or two with Affresh and leave the top open as recommended by the manufacturer.
