Derived from the previous generation A4 sedan, the A5 coupe and convertible have quiet, luxurious cabins. Although snug, the rear seat is one of the best in any convertible. The car drives well, with nimble handling and a firm, road-hugging suspension. Power from the base 2.0-liter, turbo four-cylinder is ample, but it sounds raspy; the eight-speed automatic is supersmooth. Interior fit and finish is superb and the seats are supportive. The controls take some time to get used to, but are ultimately logical. The convertible is almost devoid of wind buffeting, and you can operate the insulated soft top up to 30 mph. The S5 uses the supercharged V6 and seven-speed automated manual.
