About - Britax B-Safe

The Britax B-Safe is part of the car seat test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, infant car seat models like the B-Safe are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Crash protection:

We hired a contract lab to perform crash tests to the government standards as dictated by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213. Crash tests simulate a head-on 30-mph crash with a 22-pound instrumented test dummy representing an average-sized 12-month-old child.

Ease of use:

Includes the clarity of instructions, installing the seat, adjusting harness positions, placing a child in the seat, securing the harness, and removing the child.

Fit to vehicle LATCH:
A rating of how easy it is to securely and correctly install each seat using the LATCH system in a variety of vehicles and how well the seats fit each vehicle once installed.

Comment:
If you read this review, I recommend buying a Britax B-Safe than a Chicco even if Chicco is rated #1 by CR.

We were looking for the baby seat for our 3rd child. Initially mislead by the 'CR recommendation' and bought the Chicco KeyFit. We were not comfortable of that decision as Chicco is new name in Canada and the sophisticated UAS belt mechanism -- as a user already mentioned that it can get loose itself in CR reviews. Beside, we have been using Britax all along and we were wondering why Britax was not 'recommended by CR'.

Started to look more at the 'rating' section and found my answer -- Britax B-Safe is superior to Chicco for the 'crash protection', which is more important for us than the 'Ease' and 'Fits' for us.

Chicco was returned and the Britax B-Safe was bought and we are using it with peace of mind for the last 2 weeks. I am happy that I took the time to dig more to get adequate info on Britax B-Safe.

Also would recommend that CR should have more weight on their rating for the safety (crash-protection) than the other stuff that can be worked out by parents one way or the other.

Note: Reason for the 4 stars is for a reminder to Britax not to let your trusted users down. Learn from other manufacturers like Chicco to add ease of use -- for example base height adjuster on B-Safe is very difficult to use compared to many other models.

Comment:
We bought this seat because it would fit with the B-Agile stroller without an adapter bar. Fortunately, we haven't had to test its crash worthiness yet, but it has met our needs just fine. The one problem we have with it is fitting it into our cars. When the seat is in its base, it sits much further forward than most infant seats. This makes fitting it into a medium to small car, very difficult. We could not fit this seat in the middle of either of our back seats. My wife drives a Dodge Caliber and with this seat in place behind the passengers seat, that seat needs to be almost all the way forward. In my Ford Fusion, the front passenger seat is at a comfortable position, but still not as far back as it can go, and it cannot be reclined. If space isn't a concern, this seat is certainly a great option.

Comment:
The product isn't very adaptable. In fact in order to use the car seat with anything other than a britax product you must remove a certain peice. Unfortunatley the screws strip really easy because the plastic is cheap and has too much give. My wife purchased this without checking with me. This product doesnt even rank in consumer research's top 20. That is how bad it is
