About - Britax Companion

The Companion is part of the car seat test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, infant car seat models like the Companion are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Crash protection:

We hired a contract lab to perform crash tests to the government standards as dictated by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213. Crash tests simulate a head-on 30-mph crash with a 22-pound instrumented test dummy representing an average-sized 12-month-old child.

Ease of use:

Includes the clarity of instructions, installing the seat, adjusting harness positions, placing a child in the seat, securing the harness, and removing the child.

Fit to vehicle:

Represents the ease of securely installing the seats in cars with various seat configurations and safety belt designs.

By Lily's Mom from Savannah, GA on 8/13/2009
Pros:

Cons:
Heavy, Hot for baby, Price
Best Uses:
Airline travel, In vehicle, With travel system
How long have you owned it:
More than six months
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this car seat after reading MANY reviews on all makes and manufacturers of carseats. My husband and I made an international move back to the States when our daughter was only one month old and I must say that the move was pleasant because of this carseat. My daughter would sleep for hours in this seat (longest was 7 hours which she barely sleeps that long now and she's almost 11 months old!). It is a little heavy but doesn't really bother you until the baby gets a little older and heavier (you aren't taking it in and out of the car very often at that point anyway). We now live in the South and she does get a little hot in it at times but now she's older and we've taken the headrest out, I believe that helped out with the heat issue. We purchased the Vigour system to go with the Companion and it works well. I understand that Britax is now coming out with a different infant travel system that looks even better!

My daughter is now approaching the 20 lb mark so we are looking into purchasing her next carseat. I will DEFINITELY go with a Britax. They are pricey but well worth the $$ for your baby!

Good, but heavy!!
By Ellen from Pomfret, MD on 6/19/2009
Pros:
Easy To Install, Narrow base, No twist straps, Rebound bar, Safe
Cons:
Chest clip seems flimsy, Very Heavy
How long have you owned it:
One-to-three months
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

We have been very happy with this carseat, and it is very study. We like the head protection for infants - it keeps the baby's head from flopping around while you're carrying the car seat, too. The car seat weighs 20 pounds by itself - add in the baby and it is heavy! We love the stroller (Vigour) that is made to work as a travel system with this carseat, as well.

Almost perfect.
By Mom of Three to Be from Richmond, VA on 6/6/2009
Pros:
Easy to carry, Good Fit in any Car, Not too heavy, Safe, Sturdy
Cons:
Awkward for Baby, Hot
Best Uses:
Daily Travel
How long have you owned it:
More than six months
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

We bought this seat for my now three year old daughter and plan on using it for our new baby due this year. The seat is fabulous and sturdy and feels very safe. The inflatable head padding is great for small babies and for safety. Older babies may not like having their ears squished and not being able to turn to see what is going on. It is also very hot for the baby with all the padding. I consider this a pretty small price to pay for safety but some babies may be more sensitive and truly uncomfortable. It has fit well in a minivan with leather seats, a Jeep with upholstered bench seats, and any sedan that I have tried. Smaller sedans left the edge of the base hanging over the seat but the fit was still rock solid.
