About - Graco Snugride

The Graco Snugride is part of the car seat test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, infant car seat models like the Snugride are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Crash protection:

We hired a contract lab to perform crash tests to the government standards as dictated by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213. Crash tests simulate a head-on 30-mph crash with a 22-pound instrumented test dummy representing an average-sized 12-month-old child.

Ease of use:

Includes the clarity of instructions, installing the seat, adjusting harness positions, placing a child in the seat, securing the harness, and removing the child.

Fit to vehicle LATCH:
A rating of how easy it is to securely and correctly install each seat using the LATCH system in a variety of vehicles and how well the seats fit each vehicle once installed.

Comment:
DO NOT purchase this car seat! The material is hot and does not breath well. My son sweats very badly while in this seat and is very uncomfortable. I contacted the company about getting a cover made of another material and they have not been willing to work with me.

Comment:
If you are contemplating buying this car seat, go to a store and put it next to another model (eg Graco snugride 35 or pretty much any other brand of seat). Now adjust the straps (imagine your little one is wearing a jacket or picture putting a squirming infant into the seat who may not wish to point his or her arms in the perfect direction). Now take it off your list of possibilities.

Don't even think about buying this seat. Every time I use it, I hate it more. The strap adjustment (at the back of the seat) takes about 5 minutes and involves two hands, two separate straps, and two awkward buckles. It is painful! Meanwhile, I go out with other moms and they all slip their children into their seats then tighten the straps with a one-handed pull tab at the FRONT of the seat. I have such a hard time with this thing that I'm buying a different seat DESPITE my frugal nature.

In addition to the big strap issue, the handle feels cheap and is not comfortable to carry (the plastic digs into your hand), the hood is flimsy and not very wide (note the bunching at the back of the hood instead of a support bar like other models have) and will not stay in the position I place it, and there is absolutely no padding (which I remedied with an insert, but is disturbing to use without extra padding - little heads bob every which way!).

If you buy this seat, there is a good chance you will be buying another one before your baby grows out of it. It may seem inexpensive, but will cost more in the long run.

Comment:
My husband and I both really like this car seat because of how easy it is to attach to the base, remove from the car, carry around and take with us. We've taken it on planes, to restaurants and installed it easily in friends' cars without the base and never had a problem with the size.
The only major downside is how hard it is to adjust the straps- horrible! If I had known what an issue the straps would be as the weather changes and we put our daughter in bulkier clothing I probably wouldn't have bought this model, I would have gotten the one hand adjustable model. However, that's my only complaint and would still recommend the seat as long as you keep the straps in mind...
