About - Safety 1st onBoard35 Air

The Safety 1st onBoard35 Air is part of the car seat test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, infant car seat models like the onBoard35 Air are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Crash protection:

We hired a contract lab to perform crash tests to the government standards as dictated by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213. Crash tests simulate a head-on 30-mph crash with a 22-pound instrumented test dummy representing an average-sized 12-month-old child.

Ease of use:

Includes the clarity of instructions, installing the seat, adjusting harness positions, placing a child in the seat, securing the harness, and removing the child.

Fit to vehicle LATCH:
A rating of how easy it is to securely and correctly install each seat using the LATCH system in a variety of vehicles and how well the seats fit each vehicle once installed.

Comment:
I got 2 of these for my newborn twins. Loved them in the beginning, but once he babies reached 20 lbs and 26 long, the seat became too narrow (despite the seat's 35 lb rating). At 20 lbs, the babies barely fit into the seat with a single layer of clothing. I bought this seat because the store didn't have the cheaper Safety 1st Onboard (non-air version) in stock, and now regret that decision. Other reviewers on the internet seem to have the same problem. For the price ([$] at BuyBuyBaby) this is a very poor deal, given that they lasted me for 4 months and now have to be replaced with larger seats.I didn't have the locking into the base problem that other reviewers had. Dorel's customer service was unhelpful.

Comment:
We bought this as part a travel system and have been very happy with it. Fabric is easy to remove to cleaning; straps are easy to adjust for a good fit once he's strapped in, as well as the shoulder and crotch straps are easy to adjust as he grew in height. It is heavy and bulky, and i've never owned another infant seat to compare this to, but i imagine that most which are made to carry up to 35 lbs would all be bulky. My son is 23 lbs at 9 months and although it should carry him to 35 lbs per the labeling, he is outgrowing it because it is too snug at his shoulders where the air bags jut out. We have a dodge stratus and a dodge durango...if set behind the passenger seat, the seats must be slid forward some...still leaves plenty of leg room in the stratus, but is cramped for leg room in the durango. Once w e read the instructions for installing the bases (we have a base for each vehicle)it was easy to install. When out of town with a rental car it worked fine with out the base and with just using a seatbelt to secure it. We do plan on using this infant seat again for the next baby.
