Portability. Some bassinets have a handle so you can carry it from room to room, to keep your baby nearby. Others have functioning wheels so you can roll the entire unit around.
Toys. You may also find bassinets/cradles with a detachable mobile or a canopy with attached toys to amuse your baby and stimulate his sense of sight.
Sound effects, vibration, light. Music or nature sounds with volume control and vibration are also popular features that can be embedded in a mobile and activated by remote control or the touch of a key pad. These extras can soothe a fussy baby—or not. "Vibration just seemed to annoy my baby, so we didn't use that, and the sound didn't last long enough—only five minutes—to get our baby to sleep," says Jennifer Hancock of Ellenton, Fla. But all was not lost. Her son, who is now 1, slept in a bassinet for his first two months and Jennifer is still using it as a changing table. Some bassinets feature a soft-glow night-light so you can peek on your baby without disturbing him. That's a plus. These extras usually run on AA batteries (not included).
Shape. Most bassinets and cradles are rectangular, but at least one manufacturer we know of (Badger Basket) makes an oval bassinet. We're not sure this shape offers any advantages, except as a style statement or conversation piece.
Bedding. Most bassinets/cradles have a mattress pad—which, according to the voluntary industry standard, should be no thicker than 1½ inches—and a fitted sheet. Most bassinets also have fabric lining. You'll pay more for bassinets with a liner with an attached pleated or ruffled hood, or a bed skirt that cascades to the floor. At the highest end, these extras can be custom made. Popular bassinet and cradle bedding fabrics are toile, vintage florals, gingham, white eyelet, and colorful checks and plaids. No matter what look you go for, choose bedding that's machine washable.
Canopy. A canopy can help block light—so you can read before bedtime, for example, without waking your baby. It may be retractable or removable, which creates more usable space if you'll be changing your baby in the bassinet.
Storage. A bottom storage basket is useful for stashing a change of clothes, booties, toys, diapers, and wipes. A flowing bed skirt can block access, so get a bassinet with a short skirt.
