Play yard tips
STAYING SAFE
- Don't try to do your own repairs. Using tape to fix a tear in the mesh, for example, could pose a choking hazard if the tape
comes loose and your child chews it.
- Never add an extra mattress, padding, or blankets. Mattresses should be no more than 1 inch thick. Extra bedding in the play
yard could smother a child.
- Detach the bassinet and changing table when the play yard is in use. They could pose a serious entrapment hazard.
- Don't put more than one child in a play yard. They could be smothered or injured by bumping into one another.
- Use only sheets designed for your play yard. Crib or adult sheets will be too big and pull loose and a child could become
tangled in them.
SHOPPING
- Fold it before you buy it. Many manufacturers say their product is simple to use. But the only way to tell is to try folding
it in the store.
- Register for the play yard you want. Play yards are popular gifts, so make sure you get the right one for you and your baby.
Also, keep in mind that there are lots of play yard colors and patterns out there.
TRAVEL
- Bring your own play yard. It can be a safer option than counting on a hotel to provide a safe bed for your baby. The Consumer
Product Safety Commission has a good hotel safety checklist (www.cpsc.gov).
- Buy a model with wheels. If you travel a lot, it will make life easier.
