I was soooo frustrated with this product I was ready to box it up & take it back. I couldn't get a consistent reading, etc. Basically all of the dings from the other negative posts. Then I read the DIRECTIONS!!! They directed me to their website to view a short TRAINING VIDEO!!! I immediately went there, watched the video AND IT HAS WORKED PERFECTLY FROM THAT POINT ON. I think the reason that the nurse who tested it and gave it a 5 star rating liked it so well was that she already KNEW how to use it. In looking over the other reviews, I felt someone should speak up and inform everyone that this video is the missing puzzle piece that makes ALL of the difference. If there is a con, then that is it. Exergen should have an advertising Flash added to the front of the product cover that BOLDLY proclaims that there is a free Training Video for users to watch. I doubt that even Consumer Reports knew about the videos existence, since they said nothing about it. Would I recommend it to my friends? Yes; with the strong admonition to go to their website and watch the video if they want to be happy with their purchace. I know I am. :)

I bought this when my 7 mo. old daughter was very sick, in and out of the hospital. I didn't want to wake her at night to get a quick temp. I don't expect any thermometer to be 100% accurate, but i find this one difficult to get consistent readings. You need to hold the circle to the skin and swipe in a certain way. It's difficult with the contoures of the skull. If i do it 3 times I get 3 diff. readings. Clearly user error but i have owned this for several years and haven't gotten better at it. I recently bought a thermal no touch thermometer that I LOVE. You can either hold it to the skin or scan from 1-2 in. away. I tested it by taking a temp the old fashion way and it was very accurate. I don't recommend the temporal thermometer.

Needed an easy thermometer for a child. It was very difficult to set up. Temperatures varied from 76 deg to 104 deg. Body temperature is often very important to know. It should be accurate and straight forward to use. This thermometer is neither.

No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
