Guidelines for junior chefs
It's such a great feeling the first time your child decides to pamper you with breakfast in bed. However, when you awaken to the clanging of kitchenware, and the scent of sweet rolls and coffee make sure there's an adult in there helping to create the meal until kids reach age 13. Here are guidelines of what supervised children can safely do, from Safe Kids Worldwide.

  • Age 3 to 5: Mix ingredients in a bowl; use a cookie cutter.

  • Age 6 to 8: Measure ingredients and peel vegetables.

  • Age 9 to 12: Open cans and use electrical kitchen appliances, such as blenders, food processors, electric mixers, and microwaves; turn burners on and off.

  • Age 13 and older: Most kids can operate the stovetop and microwave oven, bake cookies, and drain pasta or vegetables into a colander without adult supervision.
