For ages: 8 and up

What it is: Kids can gain and test their knowledge of science and nature facts using this game/book. One or two players can randomly choose any of 1,000 questions to answer.

What’s cool about it: Kids can learn science facts while playing.

What’s not so cool: This educational toy was overshadowed by glitzier toys in our tests.

What the kid testers said: “You can learn a lot from this toy.” “I wouldn’t be sad if I didn’t get it.” “It’s hard--I was guessing.”


Hot Spot

Hot Spot
For ages: 8 and up

What it is: Players choose one of the 40 “mind challenge” cards to set up the board, and then use their smarts to help the red robot finish up on the “hot spot.” Four levels of play, from beginner to expert. For one player.

What’s cool about it: The game board is used to store the cards and game pieces.

What’s not so cool: This board game was overshadowed by glitzier toys in our tests.
