FLY WHEELS XPV
by Jakks Pacific: $60 (plus $30 for battery pack & charger)

What it is: Radio-controlled airplane that can take off from pavement or be launched into flight by throwing it into the air.

For ages: 8 and up

What's cool about it: What kid wouldn't want to fly a remote-controlled plane that actually flies high and can be maneuvered in flight? It's also quite durable: We made it nosedive a dozen times before witnessing some minor damage.

What's not so cool: The instructions recommend flying in mild weather with little or no breeze. We found that the plane flew well in less than 5 mph winds, but didn't fly in higher-speed winds, which is to be expected from any remote-controlled airplane. The entertainment of flying goes dead with the battery in less than 15 minutes of use. Plan on buying additional battery pack kits if you want more time. Charging time is about 45 minutes.

Warning--safety concern: There are two minimally guarded propellers that pose a hazard. If a finger inadvertently passed by the blade it could break the skin and cause bruising. The propellers are transparent, making them almost invisible when the motors are on. Also, the 8 and up age range is located in small print on the front of the package, so parents might mistakenly purchase this airplane for a younger child.

Other comments: A large, open field is necessary for safe flight.
