If you're expecting a baby or know someone who is, consider yourself warned: Before you start shopping do some Lamaze breathing. Baby products are a $7 billion industry in the U.S., with hundreds of products added to the lineup each year. If you're a mom-to-be, a baby registry can take away the guesswork for friends and relatives and help you get just what you want. So what should be on that registry? Besides an infant car seat, stroller or stroller frame, a crib and crib mattress, diapers, diaper pail, and diaper bag, many items can be bought after your baby is born when you have a better feel for what you need. Use this guide (as well as our baby product recommendations at ConsumerReports.org) to hone your list. If you're buying a baby present, see which gifts are best and which ones you should avoid (even if they are cute).
