SLEEPING GEAR
Crib. Avoid embellishments that pose strangulation hazards. A Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association sticker shows a manufacturer
has met its safety standards.
Crib mattress. The firmer, the better. What seems too firm for you isn't too firm for a baby.
Sleeping outfits or footed sleepers. Get at least four one-piece sleepers and at least six side-snap T-shirts in various sizes.
Fitted crib sheets. Get at least three-one for the crib, one for the wash, and one on deck in the linen closet.
MONITORING
Digital thermometer. It's the most precise for infants. Get one that can be used rectally now and orally later.
Audio baby monitor. Choose a digital model; they're less susceptible to interference from other electronic products.
EVERYDAY CARE
Baby bottles. Unless you plan only to breast feed, register for kits that have bottles and nipples of various sizes. Also useful: a drying
rack and brush.
Disposable diapers. Buy several packages in size 1. Pampers Cruisers and Pampers Baby Dry with Caterpillar Flex have rated highly in our tests.
Don't forget wipes and diaper-rash ointment.
BASICS
Stroller or stroller frame that holds an infant car seat. It's a must for tooling around with your baby.
Stationary activity center. It's great for keeping your baby busy once he can sit up independently.
Baby bath tub. Look for a contoured design or an internal sling that cradles a baby in the water.
Bouncy seat or swing. If you're short on space, choose one or the other. There's no need for both items.
