Baby monitor reviews

Consumer Reports is the only place to find unbiased, independent baby monitor reviews. Need the extra set of ears—and sometimes eyes—that a baby monitor can provide? This relatively inexpensive device can alert you to your baby’s crying and calling while you are elsewhere in the home.

Should you get an audio-only baby monitor? Or do you need video too? Looking for special features, such as sound and lights, or extra receivers, or temperature sensors? Our experts at the Consumer Reports National Testing and Research Center have evaluated many different current baby monitor models at our on-site testing labs. We provide you with Ratings, where you will find the exact numerical score our experts have assigned to each of the four tested review criteria that make up our baby monitor reviews: interference, ease of use, battery life, and range. We have tested such major brands as Graco, The First Years, Philips Avent, Sony, Safety 1st, Fisher-Price, and others.

After reading the reviews, you can compare baby monitor models, review our list of the features and specifications, read user reviews, and submit your own reviews. If you prefer visual information, you can watch our video buying guide.

What's behind our baby monitor Ratings?

Experts at our National Testing and Research Center tested 12 models in baby monitors to see which ones perform best.
We look for:
  • Overall score
Overall Score is based mainly on Interference and also on Ease of Use Battery Life and Range.
  • Interference
Interference can vary widely depending on the area in which the home is located and what other electronic devices are within the home or are being used by nearby neighbors. When you buy a monitor, choose one that operates on a different frequency from your cordless phone and other wireless devices around your house.
  • Ease of use
Ease of Use rates the presence and convenience of features of each device. For video models it also includes the picture quality of the monitor.
  • Battery life
Battery Life reflects lab measurements of continuous use of the parent unit with new alkaline or fully charged rechargeable batteries, with the loudness of each unit set to the same level.
  • Range
The distance in a typical home and outdoors that a unit can pick up a uniform signal from the baby's unit.
