The Kia Rio sedan and Rio 5 hatchback have a relatively pleasant, 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine that is a bit more powerful than the old 1.5-liter engine. Fuel economy of 28 mpg overall is good. The Rio shares a platform with the Hyundai Accent. It rides relatively comfortably and is fairly quiet, though gearing in the manual-transmission version makes it louder. Handling isn't particularly agile but is ultimately secure. Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty is one of the Rio's selling points. ABS is very hard to find. Curtain air bags are standard, but IIHS side-crash-test results are poor.
