CR Model Summary
Saturn's small car is a disappointment, and will be replaced by the European-designed Astra later this year. The Ion has an acceptable ride and capable handling except for its inconsistent steering. The noisy 2.2-liter, four-cylinder engine returned unimpressive fuel economy but adequate acceleration. The interior is cramped, with uncomfortable seats, ill-fitting pieces, and cheap-feeling materials. The gauges are in the center of the dash, requiring drivers to take their eyes off the road frequently. Reliability has been average. A poor in the IIHS side-crash test, even with the curtain air bags, is another deterrent. It was replaced by the European-designed Astra in 2008.
