It's important that you spend as much time with the vehicle as possible, with an eye on what it will be like to live with
over the long haul. Even subtle things like seat comfort can make a big difference when driving a vehicle every day for years.
If possible, renting the model in which you're interested can give you a few days to get used to it. If not, here are some
tips to make your dealership test drive count:
- If more than one person will be driving the vehicle on a regular basis, make sure all have a chance to test drive it before
you buy.
- If you're considering different models, test drive them all before you make a final decision. It's often easier to make a
separate trip to the dealership for this. Make it clear to the salesperson up front that you're not buying that day, that
you simply want to take a test drive, and that you will be visiting other dealerships and doing the same.
- Before you drive, evaluate the driving position and interior. Set the seat in a comfortable driving position and attach the
safety belt. Make sure that you're at least 10 inches away from the steering wheel and that you can fully depress all the
pedals. Make sure you can reach all the controls without straining and that they're easy to use and the displays are easy
to see.
- Don't be rushed; take your time-at least 30 minutes. Try to drive along a route that includes different types of road surfaces
and driving conditions. If the dealership is in an unfamiliar place, scout out a route ahead of time. Take someone along to
give you the passenger's viewpoint.
- As you drive, make sure you can see out well, that you can judge the ends of the vehicle, and that there are no serious blind
spots. Pay attention to all of the vehicles' characteristics-how it rides, handles, accelerates, and stops, as well as how
quiet it is. Take notes so you can compare the model with others that you test drive.
- List what you like and dislike about your current car, then compare this with your intended purchase. Take along a notebook
so you can jot down impressions.
- Bring any and all child-safety seats with you and take the time to install them properly.
