About - EverStart MAXX-78N

The EverStart MAXX-78N is part of the car battery test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, car battery models like the MAXX-78N are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Life:
Life test measures how a battery endures repeated charge-and-discharge cycles at hot-climate engine-compartment temperatures. The more cycles endured while maintaining a higher voltage, the higher the score.

Reserve capacity:
Reserve capacity estimates how long batteries can run a car if the charging system fails.

CCA:
CCA performance reflects voltage at our load of half the average claimed CCA for each group size after cranking for 15 seconds at 0º F. We charged batteries at the 14.5 volts that vehicles typically supply, rather than the higher voltage that manufacturers use. Batteries charged at the lower voltage met BCI voltage standards for a fully charged battery.

I purchased one of these and in less than a month it was toast. This was put in on November 2.2015 and on December 17.2015 I went out to start my vehicle and nothing so I checked things over and found it was the battery it was dead in not even two months. I removed it and called a cab to take me to Walmart where I purchased it and I then found out it was frozen like no way the night before it got to a temp of only -8c or even -10c and it was frozen like how that is not even that cold and then I get told no warranty because it is frozen like really I could not believe it after some argument they agreed to replace it then I hear them talking and they said this is the third one to be brought back frozen so I was like are u kidding apparently last week one was brought in frozen only problem temps last week were only -1 to maybe -5 and it froze so not a battery I want but no choice as I cannot afford to get a different one who ever is manufactory these they need to fix this problem because here in Alberta we have winter like am I going to get stranded somewhere because we get a temp of -20c.

I purchased two Everstart Maxx-78N based on CR's recommendation and I do not consider these a best buy. Both batteries lasted barely past the 3-year replacement warranty, while the OEM batteries for my Silverado and Pilot each lasted five years. When the first Everstart failed, I opted for the pro-rated replacement but it was a small discount and the replacement battery picks up where the old battery's warranty left off, meaning its practically useless even if it fails within three years. But I needed a battery for my Silverado fast and WalMart could do it right there, so I bought one, thinking maybe the first battery's short-life was a fluke. Months later, when the other Everstart failed in the Pilot just past the 3-year warranty after a battery test at Pep Boys, I realized Everstart's poor reliability was not a fluke, and I purchased a Bosch for my Pilot.

Comment:
1st battery purchased October 2008 advertised a 9yr warranty, 3yr full replacement. Had to replace because it would no longer hold a charge in late June 2011, luckily under warranty. Replacement battery now failing to hold charge with just under three years of daily use, with battery getting a nearly full charge each day. In comparison, OEM battery lasted over 4.5 years.
