Comment:
I use this product for long directions, and on 5 occasions I was given the incorrect directions. Fortunately I still print out the directions the old fashion way. Even for short directions it would direct me in the wrong direction.

I updated the maps, and the the maps did not show up on the GPS. Worst one I have bought.

This garmin 1300 is the second garming I own. I bought one of the original nuvis when they came out years ago and back then spent over $800. It worked very well that is the reason I decided to buy this 1300 model. I just took it to a trip to Michigan in July and it worked fine. One this trip to CA it has given me nothing but trouble. Selecting roads that seem more the long way then the best way. I also locked up at least 1/2 douzen times on one recent trip; completely dissatisfying. I decided to up-date the model thinking that this lock-up issue must be an issue Garmin by now is well aware of and most likely has issued a firmware up-dated to fix it. We shall see as I have just completed the up-date task.

Strength
Good calculation speed; easy to use, decent POI database
Weakness
Satellite aquisition; street labelling; route preferences
The worst thing about the Garmin is the fact that the map chooses random streets to name, instead of major streets. You may have to zoom several layers to use it as a map. It also takes several minutes to reaquire satellites if you travel with it turned off, as I do. As for route preferences, I guess all GPS units can fail to pick the BEST route while judging the fastest or shortest as selected by the user. I do wish I could add a new destination while keeping the old one as a via point, instead of working backwards inserting via points!

A Quality Piece of Equipment...Wouldnt Travel Without It!

Strength
Accurate & Compact...Great for driving or walking
Weakness
Doesnt always take the shortest route
As a test we used it several times over routes we already knew. It didnt always take the shortcuts, but it DID get us there. We went to Pennsylvania last year and used it around the backroads of Lancaster County. It found some very isolated places. On the way to Gettysburg we got lost at a detour. Couldnt figure out the map so programmed the Garmin and after 15 minutes of driving the back roads we were back on track. I like the ETA feature and the vocal callouts of the streets. I dont know what other features the high-priced units have, but this one is plenty for us and we travel every summer.
