Consumer Reports recommends that you match the features on a model to the needs you have. Here's
our take on some of the specifications and features that are commonly available on GPS
models like the Nuvi 40LM.
Screen size (in.):
The diagonal length of the display screen measured in inches and rounded to the nearest tenth on an inch.
Weight (oz.):
All other things being equal, a helmet that weighs less causes less fatigue. Score is based on weight relative to its user category.
Spoken street names:
Commonly referred to as "Text-to-Speech," this helpful feature is the ability to pronounce proper street names. For example, a system with this feature would say, "Turn right on Truman Avenue" rather than, "Turn right in 500 feet." Spoken street names allows the driver to confirm directions with street signs without looking at the screen.
Tested Model
The Ratings of Garmin Nuvi 40 were applied to untested model Garmin Nuvi 40LM, which in our judgment is enough alike in its performance, features, and specs that our test results apply to both.
By far the biggest selling brand, with more than 50 percent of the market. Based in Olathe, Kan., Garmin was founded in 1989, and today it has 7,000 employees. Garmin GPS navigators have consistently scored near or at the top of our ratings. In addition to portable GPS units, Garmin makes a variety of fitness training devices and products for marine and aviation use. The company announced plans to sell its own telephone with built-in navigation two years ago, but the scheduled release date has been pushed back several times.

Used for car navigation, this was my second Garmin nuvi purchase. I own a nuvi 205 and decided to buy the 40LM for the lifetime maps. Nothing is great about it.

Problem 1: My 40 suffers from SERIOUS routing irregularities -- directing me to parking lots for abandoned buildings, failing to get me closer than half a mile to a known destination, and it routed me from Centreville, VA to Chantilly through MANASSAS!!! This detour was five times longer than the trip should have taken and the 40LM repeatedly misdirected me through a college campus, down back roads and through neighborhoods.

After another map update, the 40LM performed well on the first part of a long trip, but coming home I needed to detour off the interstate due to a serious accident blocking the highway. The 40LM performed so poorly that I finally had to stop and buy a map.

The 40LM has no problems in many locations where I drive -- it got me to Destin and back without incident -- but at least two areas completely confuse the device: Maryland and Virginia near DC, and Central Kentucky.

Problem 2: I just RMA'd the unit because it died -- the device stopped charging on another trip to DC, leaving me dependent on my smart phone's GPS. (Yes the 40LM got me lost again - it directed me onto 470 North to go from Dulles to Rockville, MD.) I hope the replacement performs better; The fact that complete failure is in my mind less important than the 40's performance while functioning should tell you something.

Problem 3: the unit failed to save many Favorites, and home locations. With other Garmin GPS's I can sit in my driveway and once I acquire satellites, I can easily save the location as HOME. This is not possible with the nuvi 40LM.

And yes I updated maps... immediately upon receipt of the device and then again when a new update became available. That is two updates in eight months; don't blame the woes on out-of-date maps!

I had used a similar gps before while in Fla and became accustomed to this type/model...rec new one for xmas...aquires satellite info quickly outside but timely if your inside a building...routing is not that good...first time using this one, it kept routing us a very long way around from our destination...luckily, we had known our way to the destination...I'll give it one more try and if it does it again I will return it for a better model...garmin has so many models, I think they've lost quality on most...

Comment:
Brand new unit. Would not allow update. Said it had the wrong key, but it is new out of the box and should have lifetime map updates. I have owned 5 garmins over the years and this is unacceptable. Their support is not available on weekends or holidays.
