Consumer Reports recommends that you match the features on a model to the needs you have. Here's
our take on some of the specifications and features that are commonly available on GPS
models like the Nuvi 40LM.
Screen size (in.):
The diagonal length of the display screen measured in inches and rounded to the nearest tenth on an inch.
Weight (oz.):
Measured weight of just the unit (excluding mount) in ounces rounded to the nearest tenth.
Spoken street names:
Commonly referred to as "Text-to-Speech," this helpful feature is the ability to pronounce proper street names. For example, a system with this feature would say, "Turn right on Truman Avenue" rather than, "Turn right in 500 feet." Spoken street names allows the driver to confirm directions with street signs without looking at the screen.
Tested Model
The Ratings of Garmin Nuvi 40 were applied to untested model Garmin Nuvi 40LM, which in our judgment is enough alike in its performance, features, and specs that our test results apply to both.
By far the biggest selling brand, with more than 50 percent of the market. Based in Olathe, Kan., Garmin was founded in 1989, and today it has 7,000 employees. Garmin GPS navigators have consistently scored near or at the top of our ratings. In addition to portable GPS units, Garmin makes a variety of fitness training devices and products for marine and aviation use. The company announced plans to sell its own telephone with built-in navigation two years ago, but the scheduled release date has been pushed back several times.

I had used a similar gps before while in Fla and became accustomed to this type/model...rec new one for xmas...aquires satellite info quickly outside but timely if your inside a building...routing is not that good...first time using this one, it kept routing us a very long way around from our destination...luckily, we had known our way to the destination...I'll give it one more try and if it does it again I will return it for a better model...garmin has so many models, I think they've lost quality on most...

Brand new unit. Would not allow update. Said it had the wrong key, but it is new out of the box and should have lifetime map updates. I have owned 5 garmins over the years and this is unacceptable. Their support is not available on weekends or holidays.

Comment:
This is the first GPS I've used in a car (though I've used a lot of hand-held GPS models in the backcountry). I used it intensively during a 7-week road trip around North America.

Options are very intuitive, particularly compared to a TomTom model I recently handled in a friend's car - so a guest navigator can easily figure out how to use it by guessing. Clear, easy-to-read display; good, clear representation of highway lanes and ramps. Easy to quickly re-plan routes while on the road. No option to calculate alternate routes (unless you've ignored its instructions, forcing it to recalculate) a la Google Maps, but it seems that's not a common feature at this price level, anyway.

My first Nuvi 40LM was defective, and would not hard reset reliably. I exchanged it for another, which is working perfectly. If my first experiences are anything to go by, the method for hard reset given by the Garmin manual is not correct - have a look around on the forums for advice.

Two things surprised me - it occasionally showed me as being off-road when I was on a highway. Also, I had some difficulty programming it from inside a house or apartment - although sometimes that did work. I'm not sure how common either of these occurrences is in GPS units of this type.
