About This Brand

Magellan lays claim to developing the first commercially available handheld GPS receiver, the NAV 1000, introduced in 1989. The California company makes portable navigation systems for hikers in addition to automobiles, and it is the supplier of the NeverLost system used in Hertz rental cars. Magellan units have scored well in our testing, and we've been impressed with some of Magellan's newest models. The company is credited with introducing the first portable nav system that can respond to voice commands. But like other portables with that feature, we have seen mixed results in our testing.

Comment:
I purchased this and was so happy with it during the first year that I also bought one for my spouse! After a year, it began to freeze up and trying to type in a desired location was very frustrating.
I am not going to take it to Goodwill asI do not want anyone else to have this frustration. Rather, it will go to the recycling center.

Also, this same thing happened wwith the identical model I purchased for my husband.

Comment:
I did the software and map update from 43 to 49. Now it does almost nothing it did out of the box. It finds stored waypoints, okay. However, the database of local businesses is completely non-funcional. Out of the box, it couldn't find anything newer than six months old. After update, now it cannot find anything nearby in any category. And that was after spending over 3 hours with the update process. The reset instructions were very poor.

No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
