| About This Brand |
|---|
Magellan lays claim to developing the first commercially available handheld GPS receiver, the NAV 1000, introduced in 1989. The California company makes portable navigation systems for hikers in addition to automobiles, and it is the supplier of the NeverLost system used in Hertz rental cars. Magellan units have scored well in our testing, and we've been impressed with some of Magellan's newest models. The company is credited with introducing the first portable nav system that can respond to voice commands. But like other portables with that feature, we have seen mixed results in our testing. |

Roadmate 2145T-LM Update Wipes Database

Pros
Compact
Cons
Difficult Menus
Best Uses

Comment:
I did the software and map update from 43 to 49. Now it does almost nothing it did out of the box. It finds stored waypoints, okay. However, the database of local businesses is completely non-funcional. Out of the box, it couldn't find anything newer than six months old. After update, now it cannot find anything nearby in any category. And that was after spending over 3 hours with the update process. The reset instructions were very poor.

Comment:
I bought this GPS because somebody tell me it was better than the embedded GPS I have in my Nokia Cell phone. It is slow, doesn't give good directions, always chooses the worst routes, with a lot of traffic lights (even if I selected freeways use), and is not accurate. Sometimes, I miss a turn, and it realizes I missed it a half mile after. I have tried my Nokia Cell GPS and it's great, gives excellent and clear directions, is quick and I can download maps of the whole world for free. I will never, ever buy a Magellan product in my life.
