| About This Brand |
|---|
Magellan lays claim to developing the first commercially available handheld GPS receiver, the NAV 1000, introduced in 1989. The California company makes portable navigation systems for hikers in addition to automobiles, and it is the supplier of the NeverLost system used in Hertz rental cars. Magellan units have scored well in our testing, and we've been impressed with some of Magellan's newest models. The company is credited with introducing the first portable nav system that can respond to voice commands. But like other portables with that feature, we have seen mixed results in our testing. |

Comment:
I really liked this model, it was easy to read and generally took me the route I would choose if using a map, it easily took me to some out-of-the-way places. However, the way the power connected through the mount caused it to disconnect very easily. After a little over a year it quit connecting completely (while on an out-of-state trip.

Comment:
The unit worked great with accurate maps etc. However after the map upgrade, the unit locks up when you try to use some features like the Points of Interests screens. The unit will lock up and after several minutes it reboots. Contacted Tech support and was told that many users are having lock up issues after the map upgrade and that Tech was working on a new map update to address the issue. Meanwhile the unit is only half useful.

Comment:
Came with life time maps but the support software does not allow me to download them. Tried to contact technical support to resolve issues. You cannot talk to a live person. Had problems initially with the unit freezing up. Have to hook it up to PC to unfreeze it.
