Consumer Reports recommends that you match the features on a model to the needs you have. Here's
our take on some of the specifications and features that are commonly available on GPS
models like the Roadmate 5045 LM.
Screen size (in.):
The diagonal length of the display screen measured in inches and rounded to the nearest tenth on an inch.
Weight (oz.):
Measured weight of just the unit (excluding mount) in ounces rounded to the nearest tenth.
Spoken street names:
Commonly referred to as "Text-to-Speech," this helpful feature is the ability to pronounce proper street names. For example, a system with this feature would say, "Turn right on Truman Avenue" rather than, "Turn right in 500 feet." Spoken street names allows the driver to confirm directions with street signs without looking at the screen.
Tested Model
The Ratings of Magellan Roadmate 5045 were applied to untested model Magellan Roadmate 5045 LM, which in our judgment is enough alike in its performance, features, and specs that our test results apply to both.
Magellan lays claim to developing the first commercially available handheld GPS receiver, the NAV 1000, introduced in 1989. The California company makes portable navigation systems for hikers in addition to automobiles, and it is the supplier of the NeverLost system used in Hertz rental cars. Magellan units have scored well in our testing, and we've been impressed with some of Magellan's newest models. The company is credited with introducing the first portable nav system that can respond to voice commands. But like other portables with that feature, we have seen mixed results in our testing.

Couldn't believe I could buy a 5 GPS for around $150. Screen is bright and easy to read--HOWEVER...you get what you pay for. This unit has been notoriously unreliable-a huge disappointment. No auto re-route when you miss a turn, suggests turns that just aren't there. VERY SLOW when reacting to inputs, causes you to jump past menus if you push a button more than once. During my last trip I had to pull out my smart phone for directions. Next time I buy a GPS -- I should first research CR before I purchase!....shame on me!

Comment:
The model 5045 LM is suppose to have limited life-time map upgrades at no additional charge. The support people first said, no, it does not. Then said they couldn't determine from the Serial Number, would I send them a copy of the purchase receipt...? Now they've said the Content manager is down and I'll have to wait until it comes up to see if it will provide the N/C map upgrades or not. Good thing some one's life isn't Dependant on this device.

Comment:
The user interface is not very intutitive - for instance, if you fail to delete your last trip, it wants to take you back to that location before sending you to your new destination. It also does not appear to self correct if you alter your route on the go, and your ONLY choices are fastest way or most direct way - it's just not smart.

If you *kind of* know where you're going, then it might be helpful, but I am really afraid to rely on it.

And the battery ALWAYS seems to be dead. :(

Strength
Weakness
The voice navigator doesnt sound clear, compare to other brand, & the touch screen is not accurate.
Magellan must pay attention to the Consumers Reviews, & their Quality Control Department.
