Consumer Reports recommends that you match the features on a model to the needs you have. Here's
our take on some of the specifications and features that are commonly available on GPS
models like the XXL 540 S World Traveler.
Screen size (in.):
The diagonal length of the display screen measured in inches and rounded to the nearest tenth on an inch.
Weight (oz.):
Measured weight of just the unit (excluding mount) in ounces rounded to the nearest tenth.
Spoken street names:
Commonly referred to as "Text-to-Speech," this helpful feature is the ability to pronounce proper street names. For example, a system with this feature would say, "Turn right on Truman Avenue" rather than, "Turn right in 500 feet." Spoken street names allows the driver to confirm directions with street signs without looking at the screen.

Founded in Amsterdam in 1991, TomTom now has offices Europe, North America, and Asia. The company Web site claims that TomTom is the world's largest provider of navigation devices, with sales in 30 countries and online. We've found TomTom devices to be among the easiest to use in our testing, but the company also offers tech-savvy users options to customize their units. Celebrity voices are available, and TomTom invites customers to update maps and POI information, and share it with other users.

Prefer this model over the newer 550 because I like the customization I can do with routing. In the newer model, it all uses Tomtom's IQ routing. This is based on the time of day, traffic condition, and urban type to determine the best route.
The best thing is that I get free traffic and lifetime maps.
One thing I didn't like is the 4GB space. Afraid one day I'll run out of space.

Comment:
Introduced to TomTom via a factory unit in a rented Renault Clio in France. It was a really useful device, easy to learn to use [we never cracked open the manual], and very nice to have. When we got home, we bought the XXL 540 with EU maps to use in our USA car, and to have for future EU trips. No complaints, except interface to the computer for initial setup can be more complex and tedious than hinted at in the instructions in the box [I can see how this would frustrate folks who need a simple setup procedure]. It took two tries to get TomTom Home [the computer interface] to hook up with the unit, but once done, downloads and updates were completed, and backups done. Otherwise, this unit is very similar to the one in the Renault, with an excellent user interface and intuitive approach to route planning. I'll report back after some more time with the unit.

When I interfaced this unit with my computer, the firmware was supposedly updated. However it would not allow me to run the unit from my computer and thus could not set the security code. I had to email TomTom to get the instructions on what to do. They sent me 2 pages of arcane computer nerd instructions and with the warning that if I didn't fix the problem in 72 hours they would consider the issue closed. I updated as per their instructions. It seemed to work for a short while. However I started to note that the unit was freaking out like the olde-time horizontal hold on a TV was broken. Then the unit stopped working altogether. It is now being returned and this is the last TomTom product that I will own for some period of time.
