A Smart Consumer Gift Annuity is an ideal way to accomplish your personal financial goals and support Consumers Union's mission.
What are the benefits?
Lifetime income at fixed generous rates
Eligibility for a charitable income tax deduction for a portion of your contribution
Reduction and deferral of capital gains taxes if appreciated securities are contributed
Part of your annuity payments may be tax-free for a number of years
Supporting Consumers Union's testing and research--informing and protecting the consumers of today and tomorrow
You receive (or may gift) a lifetime subscription to your choice of one Consumers Union publication, including Consumer Reports
magazine or Consumer Reports Online.
How does it work? You make a one-time donation of at least $5,000 in cash or appreciated securities (stocks, bonds, mutual fund shares) to Consumers
Union. In return for this donation, Consumers Union pays one or two annuitants of your choosing (can be anyone including yourself)
an annuity each year for life. You can choose to take payments immediately or defer them to a later age.
You are eligible for an immediate income tax deduction for the part of your contribution that is considered a charitable gift.
The annuity payments received may be partially tax-free during the annuitant's life expectancy. And you can reduce and defer
capital gains taxes on donations of appreciated securities.
At the end of the lifetime of the annuitant(s), Consumers Union benefits by retaining the funds remaining from your donation.
This benefits our work in support of the consumer in areas such as product testing and product safety.
What is my annual annuity rate? The annual fixed Annuity rate that you receive throughout your lifetime is determined by your age. See a chart showing the
current annual percentage Smart Consumer Gift Annuity rates for single life and two lives.
If you are over age 35, you may be eligible for even higher annuity rates through deferred Smart Consumer Gift Annuities.
