The SMS Audio Street by 50-ANC are home/studio-style noise-canceling headphones with a closed over-ear design. These iPod/cellphone-centric headphones can be used with the noise-canceling feature turned on or off. They have a detachable 53-inch audio cord with a modified stereo 4-contact mini-plug that works with iPods, iPads, iPhones, and some cell phones, but it may not be compatible with other audio devices. The headphones have an inline microphone and remote with music player and call connect/disconnect controls. This model's earcups can be folded for travel and storage. The Street by 50-ANC comes with a USB charging cable, a mini-plug-to-airplane-jack adapter, and a carrying case. It is covered by a 12-month warranty.

Low battery indicator An indicator to show that the headphone battery power is low and will need to be replaced or recharged.
An attractive headphone in an expensive box. They fit well, but seem a bit heavy. I think wearing them for a long flight (or train ride) would become uncomfortable. Poor instructions--don't discuss charging options. I am also concerned that the built-in lithium rechargeable battery may not be replaceable. After charging, I tried to engage the ANC--but it just crackled and hissed. With the ANC off, they played well--but something is not working properly when the ANC is turned on.

The active noise cancelling barely works
Poor noise cancelling
I bought this SMS unit based on a Consumer Reports review that rated the active noise cancelling (ANC) as Excellent. But the ANC on this unit barely works. By contrast, I have a two-year-old Bose QuietComfort 15 headphone set that has nearly perfect noise cancelling.

For this SMS unit, I made sure to follow the directions: I charged the unit until the light glowed green, then I turned on the ANC and verified that the light was glowing blue. I tested them and gave them to a co-worker to test as well. We both had the same verdict: Very little active noise cancelling. What a big disappointment.

The ANC on this unit is about 20% as effective as that provided by my two-year-old Bose QuietComfort 15 headphones. It doesn't silence people talking within 10 feet at all; merely makes them about 20% less loud.
