About - Coby CSMP88

The Coby CSMP88 is part of the home theater system test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, home theater system models like the CSMP88 are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Sound quality:
Sound quality represents tonal accuracy and ability to reproduce fine sonic detail of the front speakers, subwoofer, center-channel speaker, and surround speakers. Sound quality judgments are made with the system optimized using its own auto speaker set-up function (if so equipped), and with its own tone controls and/or pre-set tone settings (if any) adjusted for most balanced sound.

Ease of use:
Ease of use indicates how easy it is to set up the system and use controls on front panel and remote.

Versatility:
Versatility score is based on the presence or absence of useful features. The inputs and outputs shown are on the receiver. (Does not include outputs on the video player, if that is separate.)

Comment:
Not sure why I received this as a gift since I alreadey have a 5.1 HTIB. Think person who gave it to me got it for free and re-gifted it.

I set this up for my 32 LCD in bedroom. Took less than 30 minutes of listening to throw it away. It actually sounds worse than the down-firing TV speakers. So muffled and tinny, it was painful to listen to.

Most people that want a quality system would not be looking at a Coby brand product but it is attractive to those looking for an affordable electronics gift. Consumer Reports says it isn't good. Ok, but would someone without a sound system find some enjoyment out of this? My answer is no. Depending on what TV you have, this stereo would actually lower the sound quality. It is probable that the recipient will not use it.
How long have you owned it:
A month or less
Bottom Line
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
