About - Roku 2

The Roku 2 is part of the streaming media player & service test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, streaming media players models like the 2 are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Picture quality:
Picture quality includes image clarity, color accuracy, and contrast of streaming video. It's based mainly on the judgments of a panel who compare each device's output to a reference. However, the quality of the video that you'll get is largely dependent on the speed of your wired or wireless network. We tested all the players using a wired Ethernet connection, if available.

Comment:
We have two. One for the bedroom and one for our living room. The only cable bill I Have is for our Internet. We subscribe to Hulu plus which I love! I can watch a TV show that was on the night before and keep current with a series. Netflix is the only other subscription I pay for. We rent the most recent movies that are out on VUDU. Plus the channels from the channel store that are free.
This is a fantastic way to watch what you want, when you want. I have saved thousands of dollars!

Comment:
For many years, I had cable TV. It was expensive, most channels were junk, and customer service was terrible. Then I discovered some wonderful alternatives. First I learned I could get 28 high definition channels FREE with an inexpensive UHF antenna pointed in the correct direction. Soon after, I discovered Roku. Now I would not even consider cable or satellite TV. I estimate I have saved close to $5,000 since I cancelled my cable TV subscription.

Roku has over 1,000 channels, including many that are free. The only two channels I pay for are Acorn TV, which is all British, and Amazon Prime, which provides a vast selection of movies and TV shows. Acorn cost about $30 PER YEAR, and Amazon Prime runs about $80 per year, but includes free two day shipping for many Amazon products.

Roku is user friendly, and allows quick, easy access to favorite channels. Many educational channels are available. The variety of channels and program material is astounding, but easy to manage. I consider Roku to be one of the best values available to consumers.

Comment:
I use it for streaming Amazon, Netflix and Crunchy Roll. The variety of channels is constantly growing. I enjoy the cooking channels and can watch news from all over the world.

Pros: easy to use, variety of channels (free and paid), good quality picture and sound, although we have it hooked up to our receiver.

Cons: doesn't have an internet browser.

I use the free basic cable that comes with my condo along with Roku. It's cheaper to just purchase premium channel TV shows that I know I'll watch then waste $100 a month on junk TV.
