My wife wanted a quality music system to replace the receiver, speakers, cd player, turntable, tape deck, etc. that was taking up too much space and had no wires. We researched what's available and then started listening. The SONOS system works great. It was easy to set up and it sounds amazing. Provides exceptional fidelity for the size of the speakers. The sound reminds me of the old AR acoustic suspension speakers - tight base and flawless highs.

The number of streaming services available includes all the major players - except iRadio because there is no iTunes interface. (The SONOS control app gives you complete access to all the music in your iTunes Music folder including any real or smart playlists you have created. A gotcha though is that older purchases that still have DRM on the files will not play.) The control app provides to numerous on-line radio content - music, talk, NPR, sports, etc.

One unexpected plus was the ability to plug an analog source into the back of a SONOS 5 and have it then be available through the system. Our television doesn't have the best sound but we found that by taking a line out from the TV into the speaker close by we are able to have exceptional quality stereo sound. We only do this for films and specials but it is great.

We have two SONOS 5's in our family room and a single SONOS 3 in the living room. The dual 5's provide a wonderful stereo image in the family room and give out as much sound as we want. We control the system from all kinds of devices - an iMac, iPhone and iPad all work together so that we can use whatever's convenient. Each can select the music source, send different content to each room, adjust the tone (only bass, treble, and loudness on/off) and the volume. So if the phone rings your iPhone can turn down the sound before you answer it.

I love the Sonos system. I have a Play:5 in the kitchen and a Connect in the connected living room area. Both rooms are part of a common room area.

The Connect is attached to a stereo amp and driving a nice pair of floor-standing stereo speakers. (The Connect with an old-fashioned Rotel amp ended up sounding better than the Sonos Connect:Amp which has an integrated class-D amp.)

Sonos supports a wide range of Internet music services -- pretty much all the majors except for Apple's iTunes brand streaming services. I mostly use Google Play Music or my own local iTunes music library. With Google Play Music you can cast directly from an Android device from the Play Music app. Alternatively you can pick music using the Sonos app on any connected device. It sounds complicated, but Sonos makes it easy and very flexible.

Overall, the Sonos system works very well, and it's a lot of fun.

The only criticism I have is that the Sonos doesn't support streaming music or audio from a PC or Mac such as the audio from a YouTube video.

Comment:
The Sonos seemed like a very good solution to having a quality sound system that is also portable around the house. When it works, it is exactly that.

The problem with the Sonos is persistent dropping of the connection (forcing a reconnect), and that it has issues playing songs from iTunes. Often when running a playlist it will simply stop. If you search on line you find this is an ongoing issue with the Sonos product. Suggested solutions from Sonos are changing the wireless channel, and some other tweaks to your file set up in iTunes, but nothing works reliably. It's a shame, since this is a nice looking product with good sound. Given that wireless connectivity is one of the big selling points, I'd have expected that it was more reliable than it is. I have two friends who bought the same product and have the same issues. One has given up the other, like me, is just living with it.

Other plus points are that online streaming services like Pandora and Spotify work well. A pity they can't reliably deliver playback of your music from iTunes.

Not what I would expect from a $400 product.
