I have used a Canon product for years, going back to the 35mm AE1 in the 80's. I almost broke down and bought the Rebel T3i but a friend had purchased an sx40 for his trip to China and his pictures were amazing. I purchased the SX 50 when they came out, and have nothing but good things to say about it. The zoom capablity is amazing and I was able to use a mini tripod and capture close-up a couple 800 meters away para-sailing. Without changing lenses and zooming in with amazing clarity. I love the hot shoe and it works very well for receptions.

Comment:
I do a lot of nature photography. The market leading super zoom, plus the functional always active image stabilization means I don't always need a hefty tripod to shoot amazing close ups. Autofocus can be fooled by closer objects in the way, and switching to manual focus requires use of an awkward button on the back that can easly trigger other options. I've dropped the camera several times breaking off the bayonet mount lens filter (after market) but the camera has never given me any issues. A thriving hacker community provides an amazing Canon approved firmware kit called CDHK which opens up many features on these cameras that are impressive. Google it, and also check YouTube for many examples of the SX50 zoom and IS features in use.

Bottom Line
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
