What's this? This is based almost entirely on the lens¿s image quality, based on tests of sharpness (modulation transfer function), geometric distortion, reflexes within the lens (flare), veiling glare index, vignetting, and macro performance. Ease of use was also considered.
About - Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR
The Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR is part of the interchangeable & SLR lens
test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, interchangeable & SLR lenses
models like the AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.
Image quality:
Image quality is based on tests of sharpness (modulation transfer function), geometric distortion, reflexes within the lens (flare), veiling glare index, vignetting, and macro performance.
Image stabilization:
An image stabilizer compensates for handheld camera shake. Optical (in the lens) and mechanical (in the camera body) image stabilizers are the best types to use, although some cameras include simulated stabilization, which is considered a less effective type than the others.
Modulation transfer function:
This is a measure of lens performance and shows how well a lens reproduces object detail in the image it produces.
About This Brand
Nikon is also a world leader in cameras and lenses. The company currently sells about dozens of auto-focus lenses and several manual focus lenses under the Nikkor brand. It splits its lenses between a standard F-Mount category and a smaller DX format class designed specifically for its small size sensor DX-format digital SLRs but can be used on full-size sensor bodies using the camera’s sensor crop settings. Nikkor auto-focus and manual-focus lenses cover a variety of focal lengths and price points and are divided into seven main categories: zoom, micro (aka macro), fisheye, wide angle, normal, telephoto, and PC, which is Nikon's tilt-shift category.

Zoom ratio The zoom ratio is expressed by a value such as 2x or 3x, and describes the relationship between the longest and shortest focal lengths. For example, a 3x optical zoom with a minimum focal length of 18mm would have a maximum focal length of 54mm.

Weight (oz.) Weight of the lens (without case, pouch or filters).
very sharp, even wide open ? effective vibration reduction system ? solid construction ? excellent resistance to flare ? weight ? 5-year warranty
Weakness
slight distortions, most evident at wide end of focal range ? cost
For me, this is pretty close to the perfect lens and the reason I recently switched from the Olympus 4/3 system to Nikon. Sharpness at all focal lengths is as good as any lens I've owned and better than most. Unbelievably solid construction too. The lens balances perfectly on my D60. Though not a light-weight lens I still consider it modest in weight, considering the focal range and quality of construction. The vibration reduction system is very effective as well. It's expensive for a consumer/prosumer lens, but the quality justifies the cost, IMO. Two BIG thumbs up for this beauty of a lens.
VR works great! Love the extra 2 mm at the wide end vs my old 17-70 lens.
Weakness
A bit bigger then my old lens and pricey.
I love this lens. I've only had it for a day now but the pictures are very sharp. I debated between this lens and the 18-200 VR, and I chose this, even though I could have found the 18-200 cheaper used. I'm very happy with the choice, the lens is well built, focuses fast, and matches my new D300 perfectly. No lens creep like my son's 18-200 has, and it's a bit more compact too.
I have only had this lens for a few days but I am pleased with the results so far. The colors are very true. There is a little distortion but I'll need to work with it more to see if it's my inexperience or the lens.
