Here are some common computer security terms and what each means:

Adware is software that causes advertising to pop up on your computer display; it might run without your knowledge.

Badware is adware or spyware that tracks your online activities and provides that information to others without your knowledge.

Malware is malicious software that includes viruses, spyware, worms, and other types of harmful programs.

Spyware is software that’s installed on your PC via downloaded programs, such as screen savers and utilities. It transmits data to others about your online behavior.

A virus is typically a small, malicious program, often embedded in a downloaded program or an e-mail attachment, that can infect other programs and replicate itself.
