Great Printer For The Price!
10/21/2008
Strength
Price (both for printer & toner). Compact stylish design. Ease of setup. Network capable. Web based admin tool.
Weakness
Build quality is not that of an HP. No separate single feed tray for single prints or envelopes. Get Started manual has now words (pictures only), user manual on disc.
Overall this is a great printer for the price! I paid $349.99 at TigerDirect. An HP equivalent would have been around $1200. The toners are cheap as well, around $50 for each of the 4 (CMYK). The print and scan quality is decent. It's far from a photo printer, but very acceptable for any other type of printing!Installation was easy. I unpacked it, connected the power and LAN cables, downloaded the latest printer and scanner drivers from Samsung's website, set the IP address manually via the printer's panel, and pointed my browser to the built-in web admin tool. From there, administration of the printer is a breeze! As a matter of fact, I've yet to install the printer management software that is included. I did all of this without once looking at the manual. I haven't yet setup scan or fax to e-mail, but it looks pretty straight forward in the web admin tool. In all fairness, I work in IT and have a lot of experience with various printers. Still, I'll take Samsung's web admin tool over many of the others that are out there.I can't vouch for longevity, as I've only been using it for 3 days.NOTE: I also installed the latest firmware. Highly recommended, as I believe it fixes some really annoying problems that were in earlier firmware versions.

CLX-3175FN--Nice Compact Affordable Color Laser Mutifunction Printer
09/28/2008
Strength
Compact and stylish design; Affordable AIO color laser; fast copy; good color quality.
Weakness
No scanning software for Mac OS X. Scan driver works only over network but does not work via USB on Mac OS X (10.3.9 and 10.5.4); No independent tray for envelops; Slow preview scan.
CLX-3175FN is a compact color laser multifunction printer. I'm pleased with its over all quality and functionality. It prints and copies fast. The quality of color is more accurate and better than that of a Samsung CLP-300 color laser printer that I own. There are some areas that need improvement, however. Just like CLP-300, CLX-3175FN does not have a feeder or tray for envelopes. For Mac users, no proprietary scanning software is provided by Samsung (this is a disappointment and I hope Samsung will provide scanning software for Mac). The scan driver called ScanManager (TWAIN) only works over network (I use a router to set up DHCP and the scan driver picks up an IP automatically.) But connecting via USB, the scan driver does not function at all. I tried it with two different Macs (one is 10.3.9, the other, 10.5.4) but no luck. The preview of scanning is slow--it takes almost as long as scanning. I haven't tried faxing so I cannot comment on its faxing functionality. All in all, CLX-3175FN does what I need to do and I'm satisfied with the affordable price.

The one I got had a manufacturing defect! and beware of officemax
09/03/2008
Strength
small size, quiet
Weakness
Beware of manufacturing defect!!
I was so happy to know that there was a color laser multifunction printer that would come in 300$. Well with tax it would come in about 320$ in office max. and sometime ago somebody got it in 280$ from circuitcity and had also written good things about the printer. I was really impressed. I was still impressed with the printer when I brought it home from office max. I got it in about 351.43 (with tax and one year of 'max warranty'). I set it up on the network, printed a test page, and 'wow'! what a quality. But when I printed my own picture in colour, the quality was not that good by the way. the 'test' page must have been configured in such a way that it comes out so well. I had tested the printer at office max, tried copying in color and grayscale. Grayscale was ok, color copy was not that good, even some inkjet do a better job I think. but nevertheless, the price and lower cost of per page printing still attracted me to the printer. Thats why I brought it home. What I had noticed during installation was that it said 'scanner locked'. I had not read the 'user guide' (which is not there printed, but as a pdf file in one of the 2 cds). I didn't have to scan or copy in the beginning. After about a week, i had to copy a page, and then I came to know that it is an error. I tried to copy, it said 'scanner error'. I went to the 'user guide' for help. It said, if there is 'scanner locked', switch off the printer and switch it back on, if it still says so, call for service. Well it was only about a week, and it had MAX Warranty from officemax, so I called them. I called them so that I could get some help, may be there could be some way to get the scanner unlocked. But the office max guy talked to me so rudely, it made me feel, I will never buy anything from officemax again. (By the way i had not bought anything from them earlier too, I went there because there was a deal, 100$ instant rebate in this printer, so this was my first deal with them). He told me to call the manufacturer and not them. Well, I had expected he would redirect me to some service personnel, who would advise me something that can be done. But even if he couldn't he could be a little polite. Well then I tried to find manufacturer's service station. I found two of them near my place. Tried calling them, both of the office would open at 8, close at 5, and due to my work, it was impossible for me to be at home so that they could come and fix it up. I had no choice but to take the printer to officemax and have them repair it and may be i could collect it, as they would be open till 10 in the evening. I took the printer there, asked them if it could be repaired or replaced. The lady there told me whether I want to replace it or refund (no repair option). I told I want a replacement. It was still a good printer to me if the scanner part worked. She contacted somebody and later told me there is no replacement, and she could refund. I had no choice, I could not go back with a good printer which wouldn't work. So I took the refund. After that I went to the printer section to see whether they really were out of stock. I noticed the 100$ rebate thing was over. The price of the printer had gone up 399$. Now I do not know whether I didn't get a replacement (and got a refund instead) because the rebate thing was over or not. But the things that I will be aware in future is that if a product is a Samsung, I will open up the package and test it fully at the store itself, and only then I will buy it. It will save my time as well as my gas money. I still can't believe they dont even test their product after manufacturing it. And I would never buy anything from officemax, not after such a great after sales response. And if you have read it thus far, I believe you will learn from my mistake.
