(Cross-posting from my Amazon review)

Same old...I've had this printer for 18 months or so, but use it rather infrequently. Now that my 1st replacement cartridge is empty (XL magenta, after less than a 100 mostly draft quality 'black ink only' pages), I think its time to add my review to the pot.

As many have mentioned, you can't print 'black ink only' or gray-scale without using color, meaning: 1) if a colored ink cartridge is out, no printing for you, and 2) even printing purely b/w, your color cartridges -will- run out before your black cartridge is half empty. To be fair, I have started printing on 'normal' quality instead of draft (otherwise I'm stuck printing the same thing 3+ times before its even legible; it does come out perfect in 'normal' quality 1st try, though).

And any time the printer does anything, it has to sit there and fuss about internally for minutes on end ('internal diagnostics' or whatever), which is just kinda annoying.

Ah well, that's what I get for buying something without reading the reviews first.

If you're going to stick it out with this printer, keep in mind it does take refurbished cartridges (there are plenty of sites out there that offer them *shrug*), which you can usually buy for 1/3 or 1/4 the cost of the 'official ones,' and all without giving HP the satisfaction of having more money shoveled into their gaping inkhole. After I burn through the cartridges I have left (I bought a spare set for the free shipping), I'll probably call it quits with this one, and snag a nice laser printer that has decent reviews.

Comment:
Printer worked fine until I had to change ink cartridge. Printer then gave printer failure message and/or ink cartridge problem. I found a Youtube video describing that both the 6600 and 6700 had defective blue printheads with gold pins. The pins got bent when changing cartridge. Printer was unusable after that. HP failed to help me and accept faulty part. The following is link to explanation of defect.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4CSzF7Wjxs

Comment:
I called customer service and they wanted me to buy another printer. I told them that I think that I purchased a color cartridge that was defective, and after one half hour on the phone she agreed. I ask her to send me just the one color and she said that she could not do that, but that I needed to take it back to the store and buy the replacement cartridges and see if it worked after that. I then told her that I do not use this printer that often and it should still be operational. Basically she said that is my problem, thus I am looking at competitors products. My last 8 or 9 printers over the last 15 years have been HP, but that is changing.
