About - HP Officejet Pro 8600
---
The HP Officejet Pro 8600 is an all-in-one inkjet printer with scan and copy functions, an automatic document feeder, built-in faxing, and both Wi-Fi and Ethernet networking. It works with both Windows and Mac OS. Individual cartridges for each color let you change only the ones that are empty. The capacity of the main paper tray is 250 sheets, a generous size. There's an automatic document feeder to let you copy or scan a stack of pages in one operation. The printer has a medium-size 2.8-inch display screen that can preview photos to be printed from a memory card. It's got a touchscreen, used to control the printer. Like most color printers, the HP Officejet Pro 8600 has a memory-card reader, which can accept these types of memory cards: Memory Stick, MultiMedia, Secure Digital. It lacks PictBridge for direct printing from cameras. You can connect directly to a PC with a USB cable, or to your network router either wirelessly with Wi-Fi or with an Ethernet cable. This model has built-in faxing, can store incoming faxes if the paper runs out, and can send faxes from an attached PC. It can access the Internet directly, using downloadable 'apps' stored in the printer, letting you print information from news and entertainment services.

Printed 6 sheets before getting an ink error. HP wasted an hour of my time trying to troubleshoot it. Then, a week later, they sent me a replacement part that gave a different ink error. Then they wasted more of my time and finally agreed to send me a refurbished model. Another week later and this refurbished model arrived. I've spent 2 hours trying to set it up and so far it won't even connect to my computer. So much for customer service. At this point it is more cost effective for me to throw it in the trash and go back to running my business with my old Cannon.

I had some difficulty with initial set-up, but I credit that mainly to my inexperience and only a little to hp's imperfect and foolishly insufficient directions. The tiny touchscreen control panel is a pain because of its limited flexibility, but I imagine<br />one can get used to it - if the machine continues to function as well as it has so far. I have had none of the paper feed and (mis)handling problems about which some have complained, and the automatic 2-sided printing accessory works perfectly and is a valuable modification. <br />Of greatest importance is the fact that I was able to purchase it via a major retailer suggested by CR for 35% less than the lowest price listed by CR and with free shipping! Moreover, it arrived just two days after it was shipped!!

Comment:
This was a replacement for two HP8500's that had the same faulty software. Tried this HP8600 and it lasted three weeks until the wifi in it failed. Now on my fourth unit in one year. The features on these HP printers are great but the dependability has been poor. No hardware issues but the software really needs improvement. HP was very good on replacing the units but the hours spent on their help line were not so good.

Great unit, uses little ink!

Strength
Low ink consumption
Weakness
Defaults to tray 1
Good unit, I like having two trays, but it doesn't want to default to tray 2 where I have the 8 1/2 x 11 paper all of the time. The features are there but I haven't been able to use the recieve mode of the unit on the fax feature.

Strength
does ok on b&w
Weakness
The best coolor prints it can make are awful. Resolution is bad, color calibration is way off. There is no way to adjust it. Search for calibrate color and get no hits. It is junk!
Never again will I buy HP. I have had 2 junky laptops and now this printer. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
