About - HP Officejet Pro 8600
---
The HP Officejet Pro 8600 is an all-in-one inkjet printer with scan and copy functions, an automatic document feeder, built-in faxing, and both Wi-Fi and Ethernet networking. It works with both Windows and Mac OS. Individual cartridges for each color let you change only the ones that are empty. The capacity of the main paper tray is 250 sheets, a generous size. There's an automatic document feeder to let you copy or scan a stack of pages in one operation. The printer has a medium-size 2.8-inch display screen that can preview photos to be printed from a memory card. It's got a touchscreen, used to control the printer. Like most color printers, the HP Officejet Pro 8600 has a memory-card reader, which can accept these types of memory cards: Memory Stick, MultiMedia, Secure Digital. It lacks PictBridge for direct printing from cameras. You can connect directly to a PC with a USB cable, or to your network router either wirelessly with Wi-Fi or with an Ethernet cable. This model has built-in faxing, can store incoming faxes if the paper runs out, and can send faxes from an attached PC.

Stopped copying after 1 1/2 months. Printer and scanner still works. I contacted HP and spent 2 hours on the phone with them. The will send me a refurbished one at no cost as long as I give them my credit card number. The refurbished one will not include the part that holds the cartridge or part of the back of the printer. I will have to remove those from original printer and install on the new one. The printer was not easy to set up. It took a good hour to figure out to hook it up wirelessly to my computers.

First off, I purchased my unit at Sam's Club (for the return policy) and it took 3 trips there to get a working unit.<br /><br />The first purchase was plugged in and started the initialization process, within 2 minutes the screen went black and the unit would NEVER start back up.<br />Outcome? RETURNED.<br />The second purchase was plugged in and was fully DOA.<br />Outcome? RETURNED.<br />On the final strike, I got lucky and the unit has been working fine for almost 4 months now.<br /><br />How I use it:<br />I use it in a office/network setting for scan/fax/print from 5 workstations. It manages to keep up but we are not a high volume print office.<br /><br />Scanning:<br />We do a lot of scanning (2-10 pages at a time) and it works well in this area although it's not super fast. To scan to PDF, it takes about 5 minutes to scan 10 pages of content. Our set up allows scan and then saving/storage of the scanned documents to any of the computers in the office, which is quite handy.<br /><br />Photo printing:<br />I/we don't do photo printing so I cannot comment on its ability in this area.<br /><br />FAX:<br />This unit is a competant fax device both for outbound and inbound faxing.<br /><br />Overall, once I was able to get a working unit, I've been pretty happy with this printer. I do however, have a feeling the cost per page to print will be pretty high due to the ink costs.

Great unit, uses little ink!

Strength
Low ink consumption
Weakness
Defaults to tray 1
Good unit, I like having two trays, but it doesn't want to default to tray 2 where I have the 8 1/2 x 11 paper all of the time. The features are there but I haven't been able to use the recieve mode of the unit on the fax feature.

does ok on b&w
Weakness
The best coolor prints it can make are awful. Resolution is bad, color calibration is way off. There is no way to adjust it. Search for calibrate color and get no hits. It is junk!
Never again will I buy HP. I have had 2 junky laptops and now this printer. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
