I was looking for an Epson printer to replace an aging HP. I have an HP top of the line scanner that will work on my Sony laptop but not my HP desktop and have replaced it with an Epson that is fantastic on photos, negatives and slides. I watched this AIO at a store on clearance and when it hit $38 I grabbed it. My desktop is running Win 7 64 bit and set up went quickly, without a hitch. I have the print set to default to draft and after a month I am still using the starter cartridges that came in it. I just checked the ink levels and the black has about 75% and the other four colors about 80% left. The ink is expensive and I have priced it online and will order from my regular photography supply store. One feature I like is that I can put the paper in and not bother until it runs out. Then I will refill it. So far it has not jammed once. I do not print photos at home. is too easy and CHEAP to upload to the local Costco, which does an excellent job. I learned about them in a Photoshop class. The scanning software that comes with it is the same as the scanner I have and it is simple, direct and always works. When I first got the AIO I would get a communications error once in a while. I emailed Epson and got an answer the same day even though it was the weekend. I downloaded and installed the newest drivers and have not had one problem since. Great customer service and a good, solid product has made me an Epson customer for ever.

Every now and then Consumer Reports just gets it wrong and this is one of those times. Do not buy based on the relatively good score this printer achieved. Google this printer or just read the reviews here on Consumer Reports and you will learn from our mistakes and buy something that is not a waste of money. I've had printers made by Canon and HP and never had ANY of the problems I listed above.

Comment:
Don't buy the Epson XP-610! The absolutely worst printer I've ever owned. paper handling is terrible and the cartridges is another issue. It has two black ink cartridges but if one runs out it is too stupid to use the other one! Instead, it wont' print another page until you go buy the high-priced $39 black cartridge! And make sure you get the right one. It just tells you the 273, 273xl. So i drove an hour away to buy it at office depot. they only had the 273, so i figured it would work....wrong! After driving another hour back home it said it still needed a cartridge! Apparently it wanted the 273xl ! anyhow, it should be smart enough to switch to the other black cartridge! I will never buy another epson!
