Comment:
Every now and then Consumer Reports just gets it wrong and this is one of those times. Do not buy based on the relatively good score this printer achieved. Google this printer or just read the reviews here on Consumer Reports and you will learn from our mistakes and buy something that is not a waste of money. I've had printers made by Canon and HP and never had ANY of the problems I listed above.
How long have you owned it:
Three-to-six months
Bottom Line
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Don't buy the Epson XP-610! The absolutely worst printer I've ever owned. paper handling is terrible and the cartridges is another issue. It has two black ink cartridges but if one runs out it is too stupid to use the other one! Instead, it wont' print another page until you go buy the high-priced $39 black cartridge! And make sure you get the right one. It just tells you the 273, 273xl. So i drove an hour away to buy it at office depot. they only had the 273, so i figured it would work....wrong! After driving another hour back home it said it still needed a cartridge! Apparently it wanted the 273xl ! anyhow, it should be smart enough to switch to the other black cartridge! I will never buy another epson!

LEARN FROM MY SAGA: AVOID EPSON EXPRESSION PREMIUM XP-610

STARTER CARTRIDGES?
Having purchased from a reputable retailer online, and following CR recommendations (of course), I was appalled to run out of ink after 3 maybe 4 uses (less than 20 pages). Epson customer support confirmed that the cartridges provided in the box, are NOT intended to last as long as the replacements that we subsequently purchase.

EPSON CUSTOMER SUPPORT ADDED INSULT TO INJURY:
When I called to register my complaint (and pursue adjustment), the representative suggested that my unit was in all likelihood, refurbished! I promptly asked for a supervisor who promptly sent me a new set of cartridges.

REPLACEMENT WASN'T MUCH BETTER:
After experiencing the same results with the replacement cartridges, (and since the unit was under warranty), It wasn't too hard to have EPSON send me a replacement PRINTER. After printing less than 10 1-page letters (and envelopes) and maybe another 4-or-5 color pages, I just received my first ink is running low message.

INK CARTRIDGES HAVE THE LIFESPAN OF A RAZOR BLADE
As a corollary, I personally use expensive razor blades that I purchase in lots of 5. In order to rely on the Epson Expression Premium XP 610, one would have to maintain a similarly ample supply of replacement cartridges at home.
