No black only print option

Comment:
Although the instructions claim you can select black only print with a depleted color cartridge, the feature does not work. You will be dead in the water. Note that the color cartridges also have a drop dead date. So, even if you infrequently print in color, you will be forced to periodically replace the color cartridges even if you only require printing in all black. Last HP printer I purchase.

Comment:
Our family uses the printer for text only = very rarely print images - and the ink cartridges are depleted with less than 80 pages of text printed in black. There is no warning of ink low or even an inkling (ha!) that it should be time to replace since the printer is infrequently used - a recipe here and there, a school report, etc... CRAZY expensive and waste of $$ which we have less and less of with these darned cartridges.

Comment:
This printer is designed to waste as much ink as possible. And I will list the reasons:<br />1st,<br />It prints black text with all four colors, that's the default and HP are not telling you that it is one way they waste your ink.<br />2nd,<br />If you check off this option in the printer driver in only affects the current print and the printer driver convenietly forgets your preference for next time.<br />3rd,<br />Every time you try to use the printer it goes to e very extensive cleaning cycle that consumes most of your ink.<br />4th,<br />After about 100 pages of mostly text, all in draft quality, in burns through all 4 ink cartridges.<br />5th,<br />In a very interesting way all 4 cartridges are emptied out at once. this is almost impossible with normal ink consumption. The only way all cartridges getting empty at the same time is if the printer is counting the pages per cartridge.<br /><br />HP practice should be comdemmed by the consumers community. Personally I intend to avoid HP products and tell as manny people about by bad experience.<br /><br />After figuring out that every page is costing me about 40-50 cents, I have decided to buy a compatible inks. It worked for a while, but the head is now clogged and my new discovery is that there there is no way to replace or clean the head and I have to throw it away after less than 500 pages. Another interesting fact is that the printer counted about 800 pages but I have still haven't ran through one rim of 500 sheets since I bought it.<br /><br />Bottom line - no more HP for me.
