This is the sweet spot for 46- and 47-inch 1080p LCD sets from major brands and 52-inch 1080p sets from secondary brands. We'd opt for quality over size. Consider a top-rated 46- or 47-inch 1080p TV with at least very good HD and DVD picture quality from a brand with a good history for performance and reliability. A 46-inch Samsung LCD Quick Pick (available to subscribers) with excellent picture quality fills the bill.

Oddly, there's not much available in plasma HDTVs at this price tier; 720p 50-inch models are less expensive, and 50-inch 1080p plasma HDTVs are a bit pricier. If a bigger screen is a high priority, consider a 60-inch 720p plasma model from a secondary brand, such as the Vizio in plasma Quick Picks (available to subscribers).

Some big-screen rear-projection sets with fine picture quality fall into this bracket, including a 65-inch Mitsubishi WD-65734.

Holiday forecast. We expect to see a growing selection of major-brand 1080p 52-inch LCDs. Also look for more 60-inch and larger 720p plasma models and 1080p major-brand plasmas in this price range early in 2008.
