This is where you'll find 52-inch 1080p LCD sets from major brands and 46- and 47-inch TVs in high-end series, such as Sony's XBR line and Toshiba's Cinema Series. Pricey lines add features such as 120-Hz refresh rates for smooth motion and sophisticated video processing.

If you have a budget of about $3,000 or so, consider a top-rated 1080p LCD TV from a major brand, such as the 46-inch Sony in our LCD TV Quick Picks (available to subscribers). It had excellent picture quality scores in our LCD TV Ratings (available to subscribers) for all content.

For about the same money, you can also buy a larger 1080p plasma TV. At $2,900, Panasonic's 50-inch 1080p model is hard to beat. For an even bigger screen, consider Panasonic's top-rated 58-inch 1080p model ($5,000) or the LG 60-inch 720p set ($4,000) in our plasma Ratings (available to subscribers).

Many big-screen rear-projection 1080p sets, 60 to 70 inches and larger, reside in this price tier, such as the 60-inch Sony LCoS model we tested.

Holiday forecast. Aggressive price drops in the largest-size 1080p LCD sets, including 52-inch screens, seem likely. We also expect even larger 1080p LCDs coming soon. There should be a growing number of premium-series 50-inch 1080p plasmas next year, and 60-inch and larger 1080p sets priced around $3,000.
