What you can do

How to be energy smart

• Unplug the power supplies or chargers of products used infrequently or seasonally, such as those for a cordless drill or weed trimmer.

• Consider consolidating your power supplies on a single power strip with an on/off switch so that you can easily cut the current when you’re not using or charging any devices.

• Replace linear adapters (which are warm to the touch even when no device is attached) with Energy Star-labeled switching supplies. While shopping, make sure the voltage and current (amps) output of the new unit match that of your old one. This information should be clearly visible on the packaging and the unit itself.

• Before leaving for vacation, unplug TVs, cable boxes, PCs, and other appliances you won’t be using. Even when not in use, many of those devices collectively consume a lot of power.

• Learn more about using power supplies efficiently. Go to www.efficientpowersupplies.org for an overview of the issues, players, and initiatives concerning power supplies. Visit www.energystar.gov for details on the Environmental Protection Agency’s efforts to regulate consumption.
