We're taking a first look at the Samsung YP-K5 digital media player for Windows PCs.

It has a unique feature: slide-out stereo speakers so you can listen without headphones.

The K5 didn't reproduce lower midrange or bass frequencies very well, although special settings did improve the sound somewhat. The K5 comes with headphones but some of our testers thought they weren't particularly comfortable.

We found you'll get more than 30 hours of play time with the headphones. But if you use the speakers, expect only six hours before you have to recharge the battery.

The player also comes with an FM tuner and can show photos. You can also use it as an alarm clock.

But the K5 is pricey-- about $60 more than a comparable iPod Nano. And it won't work with Apple's iTunes.

Still, if you like the idea of an MP3 player that you can use without headphones, the Samsung K5 is worth checking out.
