About This Brand

Apple's smartphones have gone through years of conservative, incremental updates, but its latest models, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, catch up to device offerings from other phone makers in a serious way. The revamping includes a larger 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screen respectively, a better battery life, enhanced messaging capabilities, and smart tweaks to their keyboard interfaces. Their Touch ID fingerprint, which promises a safe transaction while eliminating the need to type in a PIN or perform other cumbersome steps, now support the new Apple Pay-wallet service.

Your Primary Phone
IOS is rock-solid stable. iTunes backup works seamlessly.
I've only had to reboot the phone once in a year. My previous Android phones crashed often. Phone works intuitively and I love its modest size (fits everywhere). A case is *mandatory* but I've found thin, flexible cases that don't add much to its size. Fingerprint security feature adds convenience once you've set it up properly. IOS still doesn't let you set non-disturb times by the day...that's annoying. Also, the manual don't disturb switch on the phone's side is a blessing and a curse (when you forget you've set it). NOTE: You must be pro-active to not drain the battery. Keep your display only as bright as you absolutely need; disable apps that want to stay on even when you don't need them. GPS-enabled Aps like Waze will drain your battery fast. Such pro-active mgmt will be a pain for those who aren't tech types.

Personal use
It works well in general, quite well for internet use, but it is not as good as a phone, certainly not as good as my old Blackberry. It also has a bad habit of being too easy to turn the ring volume off. I have no idea how I manage to inadvertently slide the recessed lever down but it happens much too often. The touch element is not the best along the edges, which can also be annoying at times.

The 5S is quite the phone, and computer. Beautifully packaged, and over time it reminds the user why it's a great product.

I'll come clean here. I've got a massive background in writing computer software. Have written and designed huge financial software packages that handle billions upon billions of dollars. One of the things that simply go unreported in reviews of cell phones is this: they're computers, with audio transceivers attached almost as afterthoughts.

Say what you will about the company called Apple, it's utterly diligent about keeping its users at the latest operating system possible. This has lots of ramifications, the main one being that the latest and most reliable security protocols are loaded to your smartphone as soon as possible. One of the reasons I went with Apple is that other companies can be lax about getting their users on the most secure operating systems, and that could bring liabilities into how those phones interface with banking accounts, e-mail, and so on. So, from a computer person, it's not only about the hardware, but about the software too.

Apple is renown for having great and up-to-date software, and, regardless of which brand of smartphone you like, be DARNED SURE your model has an operating system that's consistently downloaded, without you having to search for the update.

The Apple 5S is great, and works perfectly for what I need. Will I buy another Apple iPhone? Yup, when my carrier's contract expires. I'll get an Apple. The 5S will be great when I trade it in, but I'm a computer guy and will get the latest Apple because I'm a computer guy, and I buy the latest stuff when it's convenient. Maybe there'll be a better option at the time, hardware-wise, but hardware-wise + software-wise? I'd guess not.

Best wishes, wherever you go.
