Best Uses
I have a good sense of direction so resisted buying a GPS for a long time. However, out-of-state business travel made it a necessity. The Garmin 2497 was a good choice. The voice activation makes all the difference. It's easy to use - I just plug it into the cigarette lighter socket. Set up was easy as well. Even my husband, who is notoriously bad with tech gadgets, finds it helpful. The voice of Samantha is pleasant, and there is no tiresome recalculating function. We like it so much we're buying the same model for our second car.

One of my main reasons for getting a GPS unit was the handsfree mobile phone capability. Unfortunately, This GPS unit does not connect to my Smartphone (Samasung SGH-T959 Vibrant). When I purchased it, there was no notice given that the unit only works with selected mobile phones. Worse is that it took some time and a call to the support line to find this out as it would sometimes connect and then would not.

Also, the method of entering an address has been changed and is very cumbersome. It assumes that you are looking for an address nearby and the way to enter the correct city and state is not obvious.

I am also very disaapointed with Garmin. The two units I had before this one both failed within 6 months of purchase.
