Other sizes in brand line TVs from a given manufacturer often come in various screen sizes and form a brandline. The model designations are usually very similar, with only the screen size changing, such as TV-40XYZ1, TV-46XYZ1, TV-50XYZ1. Brandlines are used by the manufacturers to support various marketing strategies; for example, to sell product across different price ranges, and appeal to various consumer segments. Specific features may be found only at certain levels in the brandline. In practice, there can be much commonality among these linemates. Screen shape (aspect ratio) The screen shape, or aspect ratio, is the proportion of a TV screen's width to its height. Older TV screens have an aspect ratio of 4:3, giving them a squarish shape that is 4 units wide for every 3 units high. With the DTV conversion, widescreen TVs have dominated the market. They typically have a 16:9 aspect ratio, giving them a wider screen that better resembles the screen in a movie theater. (Some LCD TVs have a 15:9 aspect ratio that differs slightly, but they're often not identified as such.) Widescreen TVs can use the full screen to display HDTV broadcasts and prerecorded movies. When displayed on a older TV screen, such images must be framed at the top and bottom with black bars in order to maintain the wide-screen aspect ratio. Frame rate (Hz) Numbers indicate "Enhanced frame rate (if 120Hz or greater), and standard frame rate (for non-120Hz TVs, or with enhanced frame rate turned off). Frame rate indicates how often a TV refreshes its picture in a second. 60 hertz (Hz) has been the normal image frame rate for televisions but LCD TVs have increased this number to reduce motion blur, a problem typically associated with that technology. Increasing the frame rate involves the insertion of additional video frames (interpolated or black frames) so they display double or quadruple the number of frames per second -- 120 or 240. Other companies use 120-hertz refresh rates in combination with a scanning (flashing) backlight to achieve a 240-hertz-like effect. (These sets are denoted in the ratings as "240" models, with quotation marks.) Reducing the time between frames can potentially minimize motion blur. A growing number of TVs can use Wi-Fi to connect to other DLNA-compliant devices in the home, enabling you to access digital music, videos, and photos stored on a computer or networked storage device and play them on the TV. DLNA-certified DLNA-enabled devices can send digitally stored content like music, pictures, and videos over a home network connection--wireless or wired--from a storage device to a player, display, or another storage device. The devices can include a computer, TV, DVR, set-top box, printer, and cell phone. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a relatively new form of digital audio/video connection found on TVs, monitors, Blu-ray players, DVD players, receivers, cameras and digital TV tuners. HDMI has become the preferred connection method instead of component, etc., as it carries audio and video signals on the same cable.
