Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I probably spend as much time and energy looking for a vacuum as I do when I buy a new car. I have had many different vacuum cleaners and have tried (and returned) many of the models that have been reviewed here. Basically I have to say that CR is spot on with their reviews. I have had a Kenmore Progressive canister for 5 or 6 years and it still works well and it is a great vacuum. Now, the Kirby. I LOVE my Kirby. It is absolutely the best vacuum cleaner that I have ever had. It cleans like no other and the attachments are awesome. I use the sander a lot and love that the vacuum sucks the sawdust while I sand. The carpet cleaner is great as are the other attachments. Yes, it is heavy and does not have a retractable cord, but these are small sacrifices considering the Kirby's ability to clean. I did not go the door to door salesman route. A friend of mine bought one and I liked what I saw. I went on to a popular auction/sales sight and bought mine there. It was new and more than 50 percent less than my friend paid. So there are deals out there. I can't see ever replacing the Kirby, which is my main vacuum with anything else. Besides the Kirby I own the Kenmore Progressive and a new model Riccar canister,

I have had several vacuums. From cheap to expensive. This is by far and above the best vacuum I have ever owned. I have four kids and four dogs. This machine is a work horse. And it works unbelievably well and it is so sturdy. Attachments are great and there is one for every task. It's also easy to fix minor issues and there aren't a bunch of cheap plastic parts. The vacuums out there that are made for pets are a joke. This is the only vacuum I will ever own.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

4,000 square foot house with 3 floors. Some carpet, some ceramic tile and some hardwood floorl. We tested it against our current vacuums and it was amazing how much better it worked. We have a large family and some have allergies. The Kirby picked up so much more on all floor surfaces. Pretty pricey, but a guy spent 3 hours showing me how to use it. The carpet shampoo feature is sore of weird, but works 100%. My last Kirby was from 1922 and finally died. I expect this one to ourliive me. Great accesories package.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I love CR and often buy their top recommendations, this is how I came to buy in the past both a Hoover Wind Tunnel and a Kenmore Progressive: both worked fine for a few years but then broke and were useless, fixed them both once and then they broke again, then just trashed them. I was about to consult CR again but got a visit from a Kirby salesman (mine was great, but I have read some horror stories). Went ahead and splurged on it and I have to say I love it! I have the lighter Sentria model, and I use it all over the house: I do my mattresses in the hand-held position, floors with the hose and carpets with the upright and my house has never been cleaner. I disagree with CR's number rating of this product, it just doesn't tell the whole story: while it is noisy as heck, it shouldn't lose so many points for that; if anything, it should get bonus points for the amazing reliability. It is also more versatile than all the other uprights it is compared against as it can be used as both a cannister and a hand-vac, I also just don't believe that the suction was as good with the other models; I've owned them, and the only vacuum that actually lifts my rug off the floor with its suction is the Kirby.

We actually own a G4 that was purchased around 1996 and a Diamond G that was purchased in 2006. The G4 is now at our vacation home. Both run as good as the day we bought them. What outstanding vacuums! They only thing we've ever done is replace belts and brushrolls. I will occasionally polish them with chrome polish to keep them shiny too. We have the turbo sander, shampooers, and zipp brush. EVERYTHING works just great. These Kirby's are DEEP cleaners. I've read where people complain about the inconvenience of using the accessories. It takes maybe twice to get it down. After that, putting on the hose is a snap! Quick and easy! Also, I've never paid full price. NEGOTIATE!

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

This is honestly the best vacuum I have ever owned. I've had several before this one, and they always broke within two years. This vacuum is very well built - the way they used to make vacuum cleaners! It came with numerous attachments that have made it so easy to vacuum stairs, upholstery, wood floors, tile floors, etc. I also have the rug shampooer attachments, and it works very well also - as well as any other carpet shampooer I have owned, and it doesn't get the carpet sopping wet either.

Overall, I am really impressed with this vacuum. It is very pricy, but I think it was worth the money!!

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I dont work for Kirby nor am I compensated in anyway.

I love this machine. Yes, it is expensive (but is long-lived so used and refurbished models are much cheaper to come by). Yes, it is heavier than most (25 pounds versus others come in at 21 or less). It is loud (but it IS a vacuum). Switching out the upright for the attachments might be slightly more involved than most (but you dont have to be a genius to master). However, if you want a clean house, this is the vacuum for you. I love my Kirby and it has changed my life (well, it has upgraded my standards of cleanliness--and I thought I was pretty particular). My sister also has one - it is 25 years old - so even though I purchased a G5 I think I can speak for any Kirby experience.

I literally filled a bag with dirt after just three days of use. OK, I went on a vacuuming binge, but I could not stop vaccuming! There was such a difference between the 'old' vacuum and the new I practically became OCD. I am not sure if my kids objected since I could not hear them over the noise (which I found rather nice).

The suction is strong enough that it can clean my Flokati (a kind of super shaggy rug) when nothing else could.

The only nuisance is that there is no 'attachment' carrier that is located on the machine. You do get a hangable storage box for them, but you have to carry attachments with you. Cant figure how they could have worked around that problem as the vacuum is heavy enough as is.

There is a self propelled motor to lessen the load, but it takes some muscle (I am in good shape) to take it up and down steps. I dont think my 80 year old mom would do as well. Great if you live on one floor, though.

I even like the 'retro' look to the styling.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

This is hands down the best vacuum I have ever owned. I tried a lot of others before I bought this one, all of the high end ones, and this was the one I chose. I have three dogs and have a lot of people visiting (live in San Francisco) and the Kirby has helped me keep up with any potential mess. The carpet shampooer is great but I also think taking a look at the other tools available is a good idea. I got the zip brush which is great for chairs/sofa and stairs and the sander/massager. The sander was great when we were refinishing some cabinets that could not be removed. Not only did it work like a charm, but the Kirby sucked up the saw dust. I have the Sentria and would like to suggest shopping around. I got mine on [...]. I don't know if I would have bought it for the full price, but [$] was good for me.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

We have three kids and a dog, so our Kirby gets used ALOT. I love the power on it and the attachments you can use to get at the dirt. We've probably replaced the bags on average every two months which gets VERY, VERY expensive. You know when the bag is full b/c the vaccuum looses suction quickly. If you're going to buy it be prepared for the initial cost, but then also the monthly cost of the bags. I probably wouldn't recommend it b/c of it's expense.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

We use the Kirby Sentria System weekly. It is GREAT for those who have long haired pets. Although occasionally you have to unclog it. But that takes only a minute or two - they made it really easy to do so. This vaccum has more power than i have ever seen and has a very long cord compared to others. The bag on these models last much longer than standard vaccums. I would have rated a 5/5 if it weren't for the weight and need to unclog fairly regularly (due to golden retriever hair). ps. the shampooer does great also!!

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

My wife and I bought a 14-unit Bed & Breakfast last year, and we brought our multiple-factory-refurbished Kirby with us.

I had inherited it from my mom. Used it at college in a dorm (everybody borrowed it because the dorms vacs sucked--or didn't suck, actually.) Took it to graduate school with me and managed to survive multiple apartments that were "less than pristine" when I moved in. Any time I or a roommate tried to kill it, the company fixed it without question when I sent it in and paid $35.

A few weeks after we bought the B&B, we found a perfect-condition G4 in a thrift store and bought it for $20. I would have paid full Kirby slick-salesman price for that machine. 'Course, I would have made the guy vacuum and shampoo every room in the lodge before I wrote the check....

When we bought the B&B, we inherited 4 plastic vacuums. My wife has rehabilitated three of them so far (they're so light that it's easier for her to clean with them). But the former owners told us that they replaced their vacuums every two years because they wore out. The models they bought and we inherited are on sale at the local hardware store for $200.

Do the math. Two hundred dollars every two years would amortize the cost of a new Kirby in twelve years. Plus, they're much more effective.

Yeah, they weigh a lot, but just think, you won't need a gym membership.

Full disclosure: I've never worked for Kirby. I'm not a spokesman for the company. I just use their machines. Daily. I'd pay full retail for one of them if I needed another. But I'll never need another, even in a commercial setting. Maybe that's why they charge so much.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

The Kirby has always been a very reliable vacuum. I used to sell Kirby's when I was in Texas 11 years ago and have always wanted one. A year ago for Thanksgiving my husband called and set up a demonstration for our home. Of course I knew what the guy was going to do and the funny thing is it was his first time to try to sell a Kirby so I gave him some tips. It's very easy to use and has many uses. I will say that it cost more than it should but when I sold Kirby's, I went up against some Kirby's that were over 30 years old and it was a tie between my new one and the old one. The 3 ladies that had the older Kirby's just wanted a new one with all the "fancy" attachments so they said. I LOVE my KIRBY!

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I was pretty taken aback when I heard the price for this vacuum cleaner, but it is one of the best investments I have ever made. I have several friends who have been through 2-3 vacuums over the years that I have had my Kirby. 12 years!
Yes, it is somewhat heavy, but from reading reviews of other vacuums, I see that most of them are made of plastic. It is not the easiest machine to learn to use, but it is really effective, even after all these years.
No one else mentioned the blower aspect. I live in a high rise building on the 6th floor. When I get leaves, or whatnot, on my balcony, I use the blower function, and its more fun than sweeping!

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

This vacuum is extremely effective at picking up even the smallest particles. Once you get the hang of it, it's so easy to change out all the different attachments.

Our favorite has been the shampooer. It's so nice to have a more inexpensive option, and the fact that you can attack those spills immediately with the sprayer is so great.

My floors have never felt more clean! And I feel like I never have to use a broom again, since the bare floor attachment is so effective and FAST!

Handling the vacuum is also pretty good. I'm sure there are easier machines to push around, but I've never found this to be a difficulty or a problem.

The only things that I've found slightly inconvenient are the noise level and weight of the machine. I found these things to be completely overlook-able, since 1) who really expects to be able to hear much else when the vacuum's going? and 2) if you're like me, doubling exercise with cleaning is pretty beneficial. Also, the automatic drive helps alleviate any weightiness while using the machine.

All in all, my husband and I ADORE our new vacuum, and would recommend it to anyone!

Oh, and...TALK THEM DOWN ON THE PRICE!!!!!! Trust me, you don't have to spend more than $1,000 on this machine. We spent less than that just by using a little silence and good bargaining.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I originally bought the Sentria after much "encouragement" from the salesman. Granted, I would have done the same if that is what it took to put food on the table. Besides, I figured it was low risk since they had a 3 day return guarantee. I tried the vacuum by cleaning the entire house - carpet, wood, tile, curtains, etc. It did a great job, but it was heavy and noisy. Once my wife got home and tried it, I new it was either going back or I had just guaranteed myself the exclusive right to vacuum our house for the next several years (we share the job now). So, I called the salesman and he took the vacuum back. I thought that for the premium price, I expected perfection, and although this was the best vacuum I had ever used it was not quite perfect. So I was in need of a vacuum, checked in here @ CR, and purchased the top rated Hoover. It had great suction and the pet hair attachment was one of the few I have used that really worked. The down side - it was all plastic (like all other vacuums from the box stores), had a cheap mechanism to activate the self-propelled feature (plastic again, and flimsy at that) and was about as loud and heavy as the Kirby. Plus, there was no way to bring the cleaning head down to the carpet level, so all that great suction just pulled in air from above the carpet, not through the carpet pile like the Kirby. Now what? Back to the store it went and off to [@] I went looking for a Kirby. I got really lucky and found a local seller with a G6 under 2 bills. It needed a little cleaning, but once I had it up and running it was amazing. It has all of the features of the Sentria but it was lighter (~2-3 lbs) and quieter. This is as close to the perfect vacuum as I will probably ever get.If I was to rate the Sentria, I'd give it 4 stars since it works great but is heavier and noisier than the G6. One last comment - if you do decide to buy a new Kirby I would not hesitate to offer half of what they ask for attachments and all. I've heard from other that this was true for them as well.

I forgot to add this to my earlier review. I vacuum the carpets on level 3 and hard surfaces, in the house, on level 2. I don't switch out the vacuum head to the hose to vacuum hard surfaces. I just keep the brush up high enough to keep it from hitting any hard surface and it works great. Except for the garage & porches, I do those on level one.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I was tired of my vacuums breaking and decided to look at all the vacuums out there, Dyson, Riccar and many others, they were just to heavy for me to push and most are cheaply made. I called the Kirby rep and gave the Kirby a try and loved how easy it was to push, because it has the power assist drive, and that it's built to last. I grew up with a Kirby and learned to prep the hard to reach areas by using a broom or my little portable vacuum. Like a lot of others, I don't like to switch out the vacuum head for the hose attachment, but the occasions I do, the hose attachment works great and does a deep clean. For those with pets, I have two big hairy dogs, I'm talking bags of hair when they shed, and the Kirby picks up their hair completely, but always remember to clean out the brush head before the next vacuum. Of all the vacuums I've owned, the Kirby does a far superior job vacuuming carpets & hard surfaces. I also vacuum my garage & porches with the Kirby too.

This vacuum out cleaned our top of the line central vacuum system. I thought the central vacuum was the best you could get, but after vacuuming the house with the kirby , it was obvious it was not. I filled up almost a 1/4 of the bag after just a few uses. And we regularly vacuumed twice a week with the central system.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I own a dyson animinal vacuume (the purple one), a wind tunnel canister, and a hoover carpet shampooer. I have carpi-tunnel and tennis elbow and all these vacuum cleaners will make my arms hurt for days. The Kirby has a drive transmission that makes it move on it's own. And it cleans so much better than any of the other vacuums that I own.
The attachments to the kirby take time to attach but I think it's worth it. And the shampoo attachment is the greatest thing ever. It cleans so well and it's so easy. It dries quick because it's a chemical clean not all that water and hoses to tend with. Love my Kirby. It will be the last vacuume cleaner for me.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I swore I would never own another kirby simply because it was so very heavy and bulky....untl today when I bought the Sentria..it is lightweight when in drive and not nearly as bulky. I had another vac which was 20 yrs + and it served its purpose, however cleaning the vac was lot worse that using it. I am now the happy owner of this Kirby which feels self propelled. I also LOVE the tile and hard floor buffer....I will enjoy this one for a long time.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I had wanted a Kirby for a long time after having a demo and seeing the amount of dirt my central vac was leaving behind. We justified the expense when we got new carpet and were already seeing signs of wear due to the dirt trapped in it. Thank goodness I read CR first to see its retail value. When the salesman asked me if I knew what they sold for, I referenced the CR price and his jaw dropped! He said he usually got $700 more for them, but he honored the CR suggested price. I use it on carpets, the bed, the stairs. I've thrown my back out in the past pushing other vacuums around, and while the Kirby is a little heavy in neutral, when it's in Drive, it almost feels too easy. The attachments are light and durable. Only con is that it's kind of a pain to switch back and forth between attachments, but I don't mind. I love my Kirby!!! I have yet to use the shampoo feature, but I will soon.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

Don't get pressured to buy full price. Let's face it with the sticker shock most poeple will say forget it. You should be able to pick up this vac for under [$]. We have owned two now the only reason we got rid of the G5 was that the suction was 25% more (what they said) in the Sentry. I say it was at least that much. It has more than my shop vac. The new model is also a lot lighter. We had the G5 for 7 years and not one problem. One thing to keep in mind is the 45 year replacement guaranty.I don't know any other brand that will stand behind thier product that much. One more thing it's built in the USA.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

We got pushed into doing a free carpet cleaning by a Kirby sales rep. He spent 4 hours with us at our home doing his demo on a work night. He was too pushy. We were on the fence and caved. Could not really afford it at the time. Spent way more than is recommended. Did not know to negotiate. With 3 dogs, one of which is a Lab, and two cats it cleans pet hair very well and very rarely do I pull a hair ball clog from it. My Kirby cleans all types of messes very well. My husband likes the fresh vacuum lines. I use it to vacuum my bed to get dust mites out. For me being only 5 ft. tall and 115 lbs. it is extremely heavy, especially carrying it up and down stairs. It can be overwelming. I am currently shopping for an efficient, less expensive vacuum to keep upstairs. I don't find myself doing the edges or stairs as often as I would like because the tools are not on board. The hand tool I use for the stairs tends to fall apart and fall off the handle. I love the height adjustment for the floor and the drive button. I do not like the carpet shampooer one bit. It is a mess and the carpet seems to get dirty quicker. Over all this is a great vacuum, but I would not pay as much as I did.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

My parents bought a Kirby vaccum cleaner in 1942, when they got married. I was born in 1954. I inherited this vacuum and used it in my various homes; in 1982 it was still working fine but I "spruced it up"- I put on a new Kirby cord, a new hose, a new bag, and new bearings and brushes on the motor- the parts were available from the local Kirby shop. That 66 year old Kirby still runs great- I use it at my office now, and bought the new Kirby for home. The new one works better, but if it lasts anything nearly as long...

The old Kirby is twelve years old than I am and is in better shape.....

You have to reward the manufacturing of good, reliable products by being a repeat customer.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I use my Kirby throughout the house, wood floors, carpet and tile. Does a great job at pulling the dirt and pet hair out of the carpet. Very powerful. A little complicated to use the attachments and shampooer but getting used to it. Heavy but a good workout and the "drive" feature makes it easy to maneuver. Very solidly built and feel it will last for many years. However, I think that, at [$]which is what I paid, it's overpriced.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

This vacuum clean great, no question. My carpets looked definetly better after the Sentria than after either of my other two vacuums. But there are a lot of minor (and two not-so-minor) annoyances that add up to the Sentria being a difficult vacuum to use.
1. It is difficult to maneuver and it is very heavy. The self propelled feature prevent this from being a fatal flaw, but it's still a hassle.
2. The attachments are not on-board. At first I didn't think this was a big deal, but after using it for a couple days, I realized it is.
3. It is a bit of a hassle to convert from upright to canister.
4. It is annoying how tiny stones get trapped in the brush head and fall out onto the carpet when you take the brush head off. You have to do it just so and hold it over a trash can and turn it to dump the stones out.
- So I ended up returning it. I see a note that says I am not supposed to talk about pricing. So I won't. Do your homework. ;)

Bottom Line: If you are willing to pay extra to have your carpets extremely clean (deep down all the way to the bare floor fibers clean--not just the top visible layer like most vacuums)and will keep on working for years and years and you don't mind a little extra noise and weight in exchange then this is definitely the vacuum for you. DO NOT pay full retail for these vacuums--you can negotiate a lower price. They suppliers will try to charge $1300+. I got mine, brand new for [$]. You can also find some lightly used on EBay for $300-$500.

Yes it is pricey, but if it lasts 16 years like my G2, that is under[$]per year TCO not including service. I'll take it.

I own the Sentria and have had it for about 2 years. I purchased it from a door-to-door salesman right after my daughter was born. He lured me in with his promise to vacuum and shampoo my carpet. That was an offer I couldn't pass up. After going through endless vacuums that I'd throw away after about a year I decided to follow my mother's advice, take a chance, and buy the Kirby and I haven't regretted it. I have 2 dogs and a 2-year old and it picks up anything and everything. My mom has had hers for over 20 years and I don't even know how long my grandma has owned hers. The gear that switches from neutral to drive is amazing. I can't imagine owning another vacuum. Fun fact, I was told the engine is bulletproof but haven't tested that out. No other vacuum can boast that.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

First off, I must admit I was cynical about the Kirby. I really thought the vacuum was overly hyped. Having 4 vacs in the past and throwing them out got me thinking. Why would I keep buying low quality that isn't even able to be recycled easily? So I reconsidered since the vac will be used for wall to wall and area rugs in a new home. CONS: It's loud so use it during the day. The tools are not on board (minor complaint) PROS: wide cleaning path reduces cleaning time significantly. It's very easy to adjust the brush height from one type of carpet to another. It's really just almost second nature. I was impressed by the filter test the salesman did during the demonstration. My old vac was leaving a good amount of dirt behind. Oh, and the mattress cleaning feature makes this very worth the money. I opted for the shampoo kit as well and am very glad I did. The best 3 layer HEPA bags are very effective. I noticed a big difference after using the Kirby v.s. the Hoover Windtunnel. After using the Windtunnel vacuum, there is a lingering odor of dust and dirt. If you smell it, it is there. So even if there's no visible dust, the odor is there and that's not desirable. The Kirby has none of those problems. In fact the only thing I smell after using the Kirby is >clean<. That's what it's all about anyway. This suction is off the hook! Using it on 10 year old plush carpet brought everything level, including the traffic areas. Of course it doesn't revive compressed padding, but just think about having good looking carpet. Once installed, I will enjoy using this on my new carpet for years to come. As far as the price, just think about how much is spent on new carpet. The Kirby is a fraction of the cost and will last (according to CU ratings here) for a very long time. Cost it out over 25 years and it's well worth the cost, even at full price. A dirty carpet wears out faster. Oh yes, you can count on it to last a lifetime too.

Ahh Kirby. I love mine. I used to own a G4 and loved it. Traded on a Ultimate G and that is what I have today. Still have my gradfathers Classic from 1976 and it is still going strong. Gotta Love That. I love mine and use it everyday. Picks up stuff that I do not want to see or know is there, but after using a Kirby it isn't there. You can go on and on about other vacuums being better or not costing as much, but you talk to any Kirby owner and it is like not treating a vacuum like a vacuum, but like an investment. People are emotional about a vacuum. People move Kirbys from home to home when they move, you don't see that from other name brands. Others are disposable and Kirby are not in the least. They last and last. Nothing if ever goes wrong with them. They are so reliable decade after decade. If you have the chance to see one and use it or buy one I would not hesitate. The Kirby company is true and stands behind their product. What other vacuum can do so much and morph the way a Kirby can.

Vacuum felt like pushing around a lawn mower, and could barely keep the belt on long enough to finish the house. Sold it for 400 dollars and bought a 100 dollar Dirt Devil. Dirt Devil doesn't have nearly the suction power but still manages to get the job done a lot quicker once you subtract the weight and belt changes.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I have owned 3 kirby's over the years now a G4 which is a few generations behind the one here. I have several dogs and cats so pet hair could be a problem but the Kirby sucks it up without complaint. I owned 3 other types of vacuums, both canisters that you buy from a door-to-door salesman and neither could come close to a Kirby for keeping my carpets and floors clean. The shampooer also works better than many other stand alone shampooers. I had them serviced twice for things that were my own fault. I bought all my kirby's second hand for a very reasonable price about 1/4 of the asking price new. Buy one second hand from a reputable second hand vacuum store, instead of paying the high prices asked by the salesmen and you will never regret it. Yes it can be hard to manoever, but if you use it properly you shouldn't have a problem. Other vaccums take several passes to clean a rug, the Kirby's one. This G4 model was made by Kirby in 1992 and bought by me 12 years ago. It has worked well for me without repairs for 12 years. Previous models I had were one I bought in 1982 that was 25 years old and the other was purchased in 1991 but made in 1975. They were reconditioned and are still working today with new owners. Buy a Kirby and it will last a lifetime.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I have the G6 which is a couple of models older than the Sentria so I must say that if the Sentria is an improvement (or equal) to what I have then it's got to be an amazing machine.

I've used my Kirby for about 8(?) years or so and I've only had to replace the extension cord once (normal wear-and-tear which was most likely our fault). The rest of the machine seems bullet-proof and still has amazing suction.

I've seen some (supposedly) independent, instrumented tests that measures how much airflow each vacuum has at the machine and also how much airflow is lost through the extension tubes. There are also instrumented suction tests that measure how much weight is needed to pull a plate off the bottom and measures how hard the suction is working.

The Kirby was far superior to the other vacuums in those tests, often many 4 or 5 times stronger, which makes a strong case that the Kirby should move up in these rankings because I would think that for most consumers, the bottom line should be how well these units perform and not whether they have retracting cords (gimmic) or not. All I care about is having my floors as clean as possible so for that ranking factor alone makes the Kirby win-out over the others.

As I stated earlier, these instrumented tests were supposedly done by an "independent" tester. These tests are much more accurate and give a better picture of performance than just the standard "very good" ratings. It would be great if these tests were done by a known, trusted source like CR.

Still, based on personal experience, I believe the results were accurate - the Kirby works great and my carpets still look fairly new.

We sit though the whole process of the salesman going though how the machine works and how great it was. The whole time I wasn't considering a purchase. The thing that impressed me though was the salesman rubbed baking soda into my carpet. I then used my Dyson and went over the area about 15 times. The salesman ran the Kirby over the area and got a good bit of baking soda that my Dyson left behind.

This is the second Kirby I've owned. It is a vast improvement over the first I owned many years ago and that was a great vacuum too. That vacuum was stolen, so I've been using a series of cheap plastic models since. I finally got tired of the junk and went back to Kirby. For those afraid of the price, there are two things to consider. First, you won't replace this one for thirty years or more. Consider that when you're going through a series of cheap plastic vacuums every couple of years. Also, the price is negotiable! Buying a Kirby vacuum is like buying a new car. If you still don't want to bite the bullet and pay for a new one, then buy one that's reconditioned. They are still like brand new!

The other brands don't even compare!!!!

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

This is an amazing machine. I would not trade it for anything, and I will buy another one. I wish they were sold at Sears, Best Buy, or any other appliance store. The Kirby sales guys are horrible. Worse than used car salesmen even. They tell you how amazing the deal you are getting is, and they call their manager to get you a special price. Its great. You will not pay 1300$ for this thing. Tell them you aren't interested or that the price is too high and they will start slashing prices immediately. You will easily be able to talk them down to $900.00 probably. I paid less than that because I demo unit he used on my carpet (and 2 other neighbors). Ask them about that. You will get it for around $750.

Good luck, and be confident knowing you are buying the best vacuum money can buy. The Kirby shouldn't even be in the same class as these other machines. Its in a category all by itself.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

We bought this Kirby just over a year ago and I still love it. My machine truly is a work horse. I vacuum everyday, I have 1 cat and 1 dog with a husband and children with allergies. My husband's allergies have lessened a great deal since purchasing this machine. I not only use it for vacuuming my carpets, but stairs, hardwood floors and mattresses. Once a month I shampoo my carpets as well. It took a little getting used to using the dry shampooer but after a few tries, not a problem, works great. It is a bit on the heavy side but the Kirby has more pros than the one weight issue. Attachments are easy to use and quick to get on and off. Great machine.

Sentria Is Simply "THE BEST!"
By Mountain Man and part time House Husband from Southern Colorado on 5/2/2008

Cons:
Heavy, Noisy
Best Uses:
Deep Carpet, Hardwood Floors, Pet Hair, Stairs
Describe Yourself:
Frequent User
Primary use:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

This is the second Kirby Vacuum I have purchased. I kept the older model (10 years old) for use in the downstairs of the home and the Sentria for upstairs. The new Sentria is much better than the older one mainly because of the Hepa filtering.

I habe two other vacuums one is top of the line Bissel and the other is a top of line Dirt Devil.

They simply do not clean anywhere near as well as either Kirby. They have had to be repaired a couple of times each. I have never a problem with either Kirby.

I can clean with them and then go over the same area with the Sentria and pick up a lot of dirt they missed.

Simply put "BUY ONE" and it will be a purchase that will last many many years and will outperform any other vacuume on the market.

I am totaly satisfied with the Sentria.

I had just bought the Dyson animal /pethair vacuum. I was amazed. By chance a Kirby sales person showed up at my door. I stated if the Kirby beat the Dyson, I would buy the Kirby. The Kirby put the Dyson to shame. The cost of the Kirby was the only obsticle. The salesman sold me the Kirby, reimbursed me the cost of the Dyson ($599.00)(and left the Dyson too!)and all for less than $800.00! I will buy a Kirby again! Hands down.

Great Vacuum - Poor Carpet Cleaner
By Mixed Feelings from Lawrenceburg, IN on 4/17/2008
Pros:
Easy to Use, Long Power Cord, Powerful/Good Suction
Cons:
Heavy, Noisy
Best Uses:
Auto, Hardwood Floors, Pet Hair, Stairs
Describe Yourself:
Frequent User
Primary use:
Personal
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I gave the vacuum 4 stars but the carpet cleaner I would give 1 star. While the vacuum does a good job the carpet cleaner does not clean deep down. It seems the carpet cleaner is only a surface cleaner. I have pets and I need a carpet cleaner that cleans deep down. Also, the tank is very small; there is more solution left in the carpet; the open tray is creepy. Hit something and dirty water sloshes back on the carpet.
If a salesman come to your door take the vacuum but pass on the carpet cleaner attachments unless you plan on washing the kitchen floor - it does a good job on that.
I like the fact that the vacuum can be used as a hand held vacuum to clean the mattress.
Design wise, the bag should be in the rear. It is difficult to get close on the right side. I like to vacuum in different directions and the design does not allow that.
Don't trade in your old vacuum and carpet cleaner ash for a better deal on the price.

An excellent vacuum, Worth the Money
By Jon from Indianapolis, IN on 4/9/2008
Pros:

Cons:
Heavy, Noisy
Best Uses:
Auto, carpet, Furniture, Hardwood Floors, Pet Hair, Shampooing
Describe Yourself:

Primary use:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

What sold me was how well it cleaned my mattress. I had no idea how much junk can accumulate in my mattress, until the Kirby got it out. This vacuum is very powerful, and the difference in cleaning the carpets is visible. My parents own an old one, and they still love it. I own a new one, and I still love it! The three major downsides: noisy, heavy, and the attachments take up a lot of storage space.

Cons:
Heavy, Noisy
Best Uses:
Auto, Hardwood Floors, Pet Hair
Describe Yourself:
Frequent User
Primary use:
Personal
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I've had the Kirby for about a month now and love it. It is a little unfair that CR puts it in the vacuum cleaner category, because for the price your are getting a carpet cleaner, vacuum, and attachments for about anything you can think of.
It might be heavy but that is because it is made to last, you won't have to buy a new one in 3 years like with almost any other product listed with it.
I will admit the door to door sales are quite annoying, but it is effective. Changing the attachments aren't as bad as some can make it sound either. Basically you turn a dial and it pops right off, and then you turn the dial back to pop on the hose attachments. I did break a belt already, but that was user error not any fault of the Kirby. I was able to replace it minutes and was using it again in no time.
There isn't another vacuum with the suction the Kirby offers, and the HEPA bag doesn't allow any dust to escape. Overall, this is helping me maintain a much cleaner home, my carpet looks new and so does my furniture. Which is why you buy a vacuum in the first place. I don't vacuum when others are sleeping or want to carry it everywhere with me, so weight and noise aren't huge factors for me in buying a vacuum.

Primary use:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

When you Vacuum, you want to suck up dirt, that is exactly what the Kirby does.
Why do people complain about it's weight and that it is noisy. Automobiles are noisy and we still drive them. They also weigh more that your bicycle, but you probably use the auto more that the bike.
It just goes to show that the people complaining about any con's with the Kirby are simply just looking for a complaint. When the reality of it is, there is only praise to be giving to the Kirby.
If you want to complain, try complaining to Consumer Reports, due to the fact that they place the Kirby in ratings with the Upright models, however it is more than just an Upright model. It is a Canister as well, and it is even more that that, and If we complain about anything it is that Consumer reports puts Kirby in a class of it's own, for a complete lifestyle cleaning system.
Let's be real. It's not an upright, and it's not a canister. It's in a class of it's own, and doesn't compare to the plastic junk it was rated against.
No offense to CR's as I am a big fan of their work, but I do believe this is one area that needs to be reevaluated.

We have the Kirby G5 model and owned for about 8yrs now. Still going strong. Easy to transform attatchments. Bags are cheap on ebay. Gets the job done and done right. This machine is built to last and withstand punishment. You can reverse suction on things. Good if you overfill your power steering fluid. It can steam clean carpets and upulstry as well. Video says you can spray paint with it as well. Easy to glide during everyday sweeping thanks to the power drive system. After 8yrs i decided to oil the front casters do to some squeaking. The front caster fell off and woudln't stay on. About 4yrs into it the plastic hook that you wrap the cord around broke. [...] Motor is strong and stays strong. Nice little machine.........

I have had this model for a year now and love it. It has great suction and though a bit noisy, a great improvemnet over my older Kirby. I like the tech drive power assist feature that makes the driving back and forth effortless. Abolutely no dust comes out of this vaccum when using it. I highly recommend a Kirby because they are built to last. My first Kirby Tradition model lasted me 27 years with having to only occasionally replace a belt or two and the roller brush every few years. I traded it in with the purchase of this model [$]. I would highly recommend a Kirby if you want quality and something to last for decades!

The thing that sold me was the service contract and the reliability of the product. In my case....I was left with a broken machine...and they took away my too good vacumms...as trades. Comments about Kirby Sentria:

A long drawn out review is not necessary in this case. I have a brand new Sentra sold to us about 3 months ago by a believe it or not very nice salesman, (who did however kill off about 3 hours of my Sunday!) However, the bottom line to this is that I have had three months now to form this opinion, and my opinion is that if you can afford to purchase this machine the benefits of owning it far and away outway the negatives. IT CLEANS LIKE NO OTHER PERIOD, AND DON'T LET ANYONE ELSE TELL YOU DIFFERENT. Sure having to change attachments every time can be annoying, it is a little bit noisy and a tad heavy...so what. Let me repeat...IT CLEANS LIKE NO OTHER, and that in my opinion is everything. If someone would have told me prior to this purchase that I would ever buy something this expensive from a door to door salesman I would have said you are crazy. I would tell you now that if you can afford to buy this machine and want the best pure cleaner, along with the best reliability that their is at least listen to the salespersons pitch, try to move them along a little quicker than they would like and bargain for the purchase price, you will not be sorry.

Metal vs. Plastic
By Kujo from Knob Noster, MO on 11/13/2007
Pros:
Efficient, Powerful/Good Suction
Cons:
Changing Tools, Heavy
Best Uses:
Auto, Large Areas
Describe Yourself:
Frequent User
Primary use:
Personal
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

Normally, when I need to do some spot cleaning around the house, I bring out one of the cheaper, plastic vacuums we own and get the job done fairly quickly. But, when it's time to buckle-down and thoroughly clean the carpet, I haul this machine (G4 Series) out and go to work. From open areas of wall-to-wall carpeting to the stairs, the Kirby is a work-horse with pleanty of suction that picks up most anything in the carpet.

This is a METAL machine (hardly ANY plastic used) that is built to last for a long, long time. Although it's pricey, the money spent is an investment that will pay off in the long run. Newer models offer HEPA filtration, and even the older models will accommodate HEPA bags that can be used in lieu of the micron-filtration bags normally recommended.

The cons are that this machine is bulky, heavy and it takes a bit of time to change out the carpet brushing attachment with the hose so tools can be used. There is no "on-board" tool carrier, so you basically have to bring along a box of attachments with you when cleaning drapes, blinds, bare floors, etc.

Lastly, sales representatives for Kirby are notoriously long-winded and very pushy when attempting to sell the product. Although the vacuums this company produces are superior in material and durability, their salesmen and women can be the biggest drawback when it comes to the marketing of this product. Now, not all Kirby sales representatives are overbearing, but there has been enough of an outcry by the general public due to Kirby's high-pressure and sometimes unorthodox sales tactics, that one should be prepared to deal with their sales people should they come calling at your doorstep. As another reviewer stated, bargain with the salesperson for the best price...DON'T PAY THE INITIAL PRICE STATED unless you really want to spend more!

Kirby vacuums have been around for a reason. Thye are reliable and clean well. Yes, they can be heavy, but they are self propelled. I really don't thin kthere is a vacuum that cleans well and is super light. Oreck vacuums are light, but do not clean well. I want CLEAN!! These are quality machines and will last forever. I bought my mom one for each floor and I own one myself. Buy one and you will see it pays to pay more more a vacuum. Better to buy quality once, then junk, over and over.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I concur with most of the other reviews regarding performance. The only vacumn I've ever needed for most home vacumning needs. I've had my Kirby for over 36 years and it's still runs and looks like new due in large part to the factory rebuild service, which completely restores the machine to "like new" performance and appearance for a fraction of the cost of a new machine. The only vacumn you'll ever need to buy for general home use!

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I owned this machine for one week and cleaned the heck out of my house. It was noisy, heavy and cumbersome. Finally, I had to call Kirby and return the product due to the weight of the unit and the difficulty I had in maneuvering the machine. What a shame, it's built like a tank and it has wonderful suction. I've purchased 2 machines since and am frustrated with the quality of other brands. Please Kirby, make a quieter more maneuverable unit that one could carry up the stairs.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I am right there with GrandPa the Vacuumer. I own three Kirbys because they are powerful, reliable, durable, flexible and efficient. The Sentria is upstairs, the G4 downstairs and and old Tradition is in the garage. A Kirby store owner showed me a real easy way to switch from the power head to the attachments. The attachments are functional and versatile, and made of a very strong plastic material--they don't break. I vacuum carpets with the power head attached, and the Trac drive power wheels makes this a breeze. It sucks volumes of dirt from the carpets. I vacuum drapes, furniture, and stairs with the upholstery attachment, and I use the floor attachment on my hardwood floors. The carpet shampoo system is the best I've ever used, and cleans and deodorizes like magic. Yes, the machine is noisy, and it's heavy, making the portable mode (in which the upright handle is removed and a small handle attached), awkward at best. But with its powerful suction, I don't need the portable mode. [...]. You won't be disappointed.

A retiree now living in a one-floor home. Previously owned a Kirby for 25 yrs. Gave it away after spindle on motor broke a vane(caused a bad vibration) and cloth bag had bad pet hair odor. The cost for repairs would have been over $550. Have had a Hoover WindTunnel and then a Eureka Boss. They can't hold a candle to cleaning carpet like my new Kirby. This machine is the easiest manuvering vacuum I've ever used. Suction on carpet and bare floors is great. Carpet shampooer cleaned better than professional shampoo company. It is not as easy to go from floor vac to hose and attachment use as others, but it outperforms them by a wide margin. My wife says it fits my hand perfectly.

I have never used a vacuum that gets so close to the baseboards--no crevice tool required. The attachments are a bit awkward to put on, but with a little practice, they go on quickly. The hose is long and convenient for doing stairs. It's a no-frills vacuum that I look forward to owning for years to come!

I'm a second-generation Kirby user
By contented dog owner from Seattle and Los Angeles on 9/26/2007
Pros:
BEST for dog hair, Best motor on the market, Efficient, Long Power Cord, Powerful/Good Suction
Cons:
Heavy, Noisy
Best Uses:
carpet, Hardwood Floors
Describe Yourself:
Frequent User
Primary use:
Personal
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

My mother had a Kirby for 30 years and after I burned out two Hoovers on basset hound hair, I bought my own 15 years ago. I'll never go with anything else. I use it on hardwood floors, carpets, and area rugs and I've never had a hint of a problem with it; I expect that I'll have my Kirby for at least 30 years.

the attachments take some getting used to; and I use a small hand vacuum for stairs just for ease of use. The key to this vaccumm is the motor -- its oversized, doesn't burn out and continues to do its job every day. The filters take care of dust in the air, and the bag insertion/disposal is easy. This really is the Bentley of vaccums; you'll spend this much money replacing the inferior products that you started out with in the first place.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

After owned 2 Dysons that both died, both worked well in the beginning, but ultimately the motors burnt out. I have a Golden Retriever and I am a clean freak when it comes to vacuuming the carpets once a day. I also tried a Simplicity Vacuum that worked well but broke down frequently that required numberous trips to the repair shop. I had a demo of the Kirby and after hearing stories from various friends and family who have had Kirby vacuums for years, decided to buy the Kirby Sentria. It is hands down the best vacuum I have ever owned. They are heavy, and sometimes awkward, but no vacuum has ever cleaned my carpets like the Kirby.

Mercedes Benz of Vacuums

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

This vacuum really does not compare to anything else that is available today in terms of performance, versatility and durability. While it has a few minor inconveniences due to it's design which goes back to the original 1930s models, those are far outweighed by the advantages.

It does a superb job on carpet. Even low pile berber has a "groomed" look after using it. You can actually feel the suction form a seal to the carpet and pull all lint, debris, pet hair etc. out on the first pass. Edge cleaning is also great as you hear crumbs and dirt being pulled out from the crevice between the base board and carpet. This is a heavy machine, but the power drive is smooth and makes pushing and pulling very easy. The floor nozzle is large so it doesn't fit under furniture very well.

Since the hose is not attached, I do miss the ability to quickly suck up a cob web or something above the floor when vacuuming. But while at first, it's a little overwhelming to have to raise the floor nozzle, turn the belt lifter and remove the carpet nozzle before attaching the hose, it really only takes about 10 seconds to do it all. And that inconvenience is far outweighed by the suction and versatility that the various attachments offer. The pet hair rotating brush is unique and the best of other brands that I've seen. I even used the blower function to blow leaves off of the patio.

Not everyone wants or needs a vacuum of this magnitude when there are less expensive choices. But after reading the user reviews of other brands, they are clearly not very durable now. A Kirby owner knows they will have 30 + years of trouble free use. Kirby has added tremendous innovation to the most durable and sturdy machine available.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

We have a Kirby that is about 3 years old (G6, I think). The all metal rugged construction and heavy duty components make previously owned plastic vacuums seem like toys. Its power drive is very smooth and makes vacuuming floors a dream. its not good on stairs. We use a small handheld for that task. The shampooing attachments are a real contraption and not recommended.

Excellent for pet hair.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

We bought this Kirby about 5 months ago. We LOVE it! We have three kids and one dog and use it about 2 - 3 times a week. Vacuuming is quick and easy b/c it sucks up everything. The only gripe is that the machine is heavy, but we've gotten over it b/c it does such a good job. The dry shampoo is great too! Growing up, Electrolux was the vacuum of choice - NO LONGGER!

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

Solid vacuum. I compare to a Kitchen Aide mixer. You buy for the powerful and reliable motor (which is guaranteed for life). Everything attaches from there, vacuum, tube, shampoo, handle, etc.. We have an area rug in one room and it actually lifts it off the floor and pulls the dirt from the floor through the rug. My other vacuums required 2 to 3 times to go over one spot, I save time with this one because just one time over the rug and its clean. It is heavy but the handle has a grip that is directly above the motor making it much easier to lift. We have had it for 3 years now, never a problem. You can tell that they thought through the design. It is not until you own it do you see how easy and solid it all works. The tube attaches directly in front of the fan. You can take of the handle and replace with a grip to make it a handheld. Changing the bag is easy. Its like comparing an ipod to some off brand music player. Very well designed.

This machine has great suction, i have three dogs and lots of dog hair and it works great. But if i want to do my bare floors i have to almost take apart the machine to use the floor attachment. Annoying!

I would not reccomend this machine because of the cost. Expensive machine.

Kirby's a keeper
By Not your average home maker from St. Louis, MO on 7/25/2007

Cons:
Heavy, Noisy
Best Uses:
Hardwood Floors, Heavy pile carpet
Describe Yourself:
Frequent User
Primary use:
Personal
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

Although the Kirby is extremely pricey, I value a product that backs it's customers with service and reliability. Kirby is the vacuum purchase of a lifetime. Though it is a very heavy vacuum, the cons are severely out-weighed by the pros. We have kids and a very large dog, so vacuuming dog hair, dog dander and crumbs is high on the need list. Kirby picks up every hair leaving our very heavy pile carpet clean. The only things that could be improved on this vacuum are the price and the maneuverability. I have my husband vacuum the stairs because it is relatively heavy. But the drive mode allows the pushing and pulling to be easier than many upright models. The HEPA bags help keep our house less dusty and better for 3 allergy sufferers in our home. Suggestion: talk your Kirby representative down in price, but remember that you won't need another vacuum for the rest of your life.

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I have owned the same Kirby for 17 years. It still has the same powerful suction it did when I first bought it. It is a heavy vacuum cleaner, but it maneuvers easily using the auto push mode as opposed to the neutral push mode. Due to the suction it is a loud vacuum, so don't use without having your phone nearby! My husband just acquired a new Kirby from a family member that passed away and we now have 2. I'm not letting either of them get away!

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

I bought the K2 and immediately set to scouring my house. While it is fantastic in large open areas, it is so bulky that it is very difficult to use in tight places. I also tried the shampoo attachments and was bitterly dissappointed. While it certainly is not worse than most vacuums, it definitely is not five times better. I returned it and bought a much less expensive vacuum that does just as good of a job.

Kirby vs. Kenmore progressive
By Todd from Texas on 7/12/2007
Pros:
Easy to Use, Efficient, Lightweight, Long Power Cord, Powerful/Good Suction
Cons:
Noisy
Describe Yourself:
Frequent User
Primary use:
Personal
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Kirby Sentria:

My wife and I have a Kenmore progressive and recently were given a demo of the Kirby. The guy giving the demo actually rubbed a full box of baking soda into the carpet to the point that it was no longer visible to the naked eye. He then ran the Kenmore progressive over the spot which had a green light indicating that the spot was clean. He then ran the Kirby over the spot for a mere three seconds and removed almost the entire box of baking soda hidden under the carpet. It was unbelievable. My wife and I purchased the unit. This is a very expensive vacuum cleaner however there are three things to consider 1. The quality and longevity of a Kirby 2. That there is also a carpet shampooer with the purchase 3. It removes the necessity for any additional household cleaning items.
My mother in law still has her Kirby after thirty plus years. A lifetime investment for the purchase.
The only reason I gave it a four star is because of the cost.
