Whole grain bread for white bread lovers

The claim. Wonder White Bread Fans 100% Whole Grain Bread is “a whole grain bread even white bread lovers can enjoy,” with the “mild,
not strong, taste and soft texture white bread lovers prefer.” (Wonder has recently come out with a few more category-bending
breads.) Sara Lee Soft & Smooth Made With Whole Grain White bread has “all the mouthwatering pleasure of scrumptious, soft,
white bread,” its Web site says.
The check. We sent both breads home with staff members or friends who have at least one child age 3 to 18 and who serve white bread
at least occasionally. We also asked members of our Foods staff to provide an expert description of both breads.
The bottom line. Only 3 of 52 home tasters thought that Wonder was white bread. Still, most said they liked it. Of 26 kids, 13 said they liked
it about as well as or better than their usual fare. Our experts said Wonder has a sweet grain flavor with molasses-like notes.
Most of our families said that Sara Lee looked and tasted like white bread and most kids said they liked it at least as well
as their usual bread. Our experts said Sara Lee has a slight wheat flavor with a fermented note. The new breads also have
a few more nutrients.
